Hi,
I've been a Mac user for a couple of months now. I've run into this problem three times, and I hope I can fix it. Certain programs on my computer won't open. The three programs in question are Audacity, Adobe Photoshop CS, and Corel Painter IX. When I click on an application, the icon bounces in the dock for a few seconds, then disappears. The program does not oepn. If I try to open the application from the dock, the same thing happens - the icon bounces, then becomes still, but the app doesn't open. I've lost three of my favorite programs to this, and I'm really oping someone can help me out.
Thanks.
(Mac OS X 10.4.8, Tiger, Intel)

Thanks for using our Personal Support area.
Welcome to the Mac user club. Glad you could join us!
More than likely it is a permissions based issue. To resolve this issue, launch Disk Utility inside Applications -> Utilities and run the "Repair Permissions" for your hard drive. This will take several minutes, but more than likely will fix your issue. If it doesn't, we may need to address each application individually.
Keep me posted on your results.

After I repaired permissions, I tried to open Photoshop CS, Painter, and Audacity. Same thing happened. (I've also recently tried to install Poser 6, and the same bounce-in-the-dock-and-disappear thing is happening for the installer, too.)
I'm pretty confused. How would we fix each application individually?

I've had some things come up, I am going to send your question back to the queue for support from another tech.

Okay, sounds good.
UPDATE: Photoshop and Poser now work fine. Corel Painter and Audacity still won't open.

Hi Nella,
I have a few ideas for you to try:
1. Are you sure they are compatible with Tiger? Check the website of the software and see if they have an updater for customers using Tiger. Normally this is free. (I had an issue with Contribute 3 not opening, and that was the solution).
2. Are you sure the software is "Universal" that means if it can run on Intel Macs like your MB Pro.
Check those things and lets see if it fixes it!
Cheers,
Ferdinand

1) I'm absolutely positive they work with Tiger. Both programs worked fine for about a week. Then Painter stopped opening, and then a week or so later the same thing happened to Audactiy.
2) Again, yes, I'm sure. The programs worked fine before.
Update: As of 10 minutes ago, Microsoft Word, which has worked for the whole two months I've owned this computer, is no longer opening.

Nella,
I would open Disk Utility and again repair permissions, since it already helped before. You can also try this:
1. Shut down the MacBook Pro.
2. Insert the System Disk you got with the laptop.
3. Now turn the computer on and right after that, hold down the "c" key.
4. After a while the Installer will appear, as if you got the computer for the first time.
5. Go to the Installer Menu, and click "Open Disk Utilty" or similar-
6. Once Disk Utility is opened, there are two options in the left hand list. One is Macintosh HD and the other one says something like: FUJITSU 476472
7. Click on that one, not Macintosh HD.
8. Then click Repair Disk.
9. Then shutdown and restart.
10. Check to see if the programs now work.
Hope this helps,
Ferdinand
