Some of my programs won't start. I click on them. They bounce once or twice on the toolbar and then stop as if it never happened. I'm running 10.4.11. I've verified the disc permissions, i've verified and repaired the disk. I'd really rather not do a full restore. Any suggestions?

Hello Lee

thanks for using us at macosx.com and I will try to advise and assist you

OK - is this a sudden development?

Have you installed anything recently? Done some system update?

First advice - Back Up NOW... and don't do it over the top of any previous backup! If you have no backups use CarbonCopyCloner or a demo of SuperDuper! (google them - easy to find) to make one - or at worst iBackup/Silverkeeper or similar to secure your home folder/itunes/iphoto etc...

In the worst case Apps can be replaced or reinstalled, computers can be reformatted or replaced - data is precious, BACK IT UP

You have done the first move - verifying and repairing... you may want to boot form the installer disk and get Disk Utility from the menu there and try it again (it has more powers if the HDD is not mounted)

Also look at the SMART status in the Disk Utility....

Come back to me and give me more details - if it is a borked permissions deal there are Terminal commands and tools with more power than the "Repair Permissions" which I can share with you if I know more (some of them are a bit "brutal" and not to be use except in dire need)
