Knowledge Level: I'm New!
Problem: Software
Computer Type: Intel
Model: 486SX/40
RAM: Not related
OS Flavor: Linux
Description:
I want to share my DSL connection. Rather than have Wingate slow down one of my PC's, I would like to be able to dedicate my old 486 to function as a proxy server. I think a 486/40 with 8 mb of ram would die under the weight of win98 even if it was dedicated to Wingate. It is possible that a Linux solution is in order. I am looking for a starting point. Is there a proxy server for Linux. I am assumming that I can get Linux to talk via TCP/IP to all my Win 98 clients. I used to use Xenix and am not afraid of Linux. Any advice on a source of info on a reliable proxy server for Linux, how to configure the TCP/IP network, inexpensive network cards supported by Linux?
Hi, what you want to do is set up IP Masquerading, which is built into
Linux. I assume you've never seen the following document:
http://www.linuxhq.com/HOWTO/mini/IP-Masquerade.html
You might want to check it out, and if you have specific questions
on it, I'll try to help. With regards to the network cards, I'd
suggest any NE2000-compatible card you can find. I use Linksys's
Ether16 for my Linux box that's doing largely what you want.
