I read a thread that was asking this same question dated May 2005.

I just installed Tiger 10.4 and am trying to create a pdf using the 'Export' as pdf in Quark 5.0. The .ps processes and Distiller 5.0 opens to distill the .ps . That processes as well, but no pdf appears. The previous writer had the same problem, and that thread never solved the issue.
I've been able to do a work-around printing the file as a .ps and then distilling it with Acrobat 6.0. but it's a bit of a lengthy process compared to the 'Export' menu. I was hoping there was something else I could do to 'fix' it!

thanks,
tracy

Howdy!

Well, since Quark 5 is a Classic app, when you create a .ps file and then a pdf you're actually doing this in classic (unless you're ripping the .ps file in OS X so you'll need to instruct your Distiller in classic where to put your pdf files. It's probably putting your pdfs on the desktop in classic, which you can't see in OS X.

So are you not able to export a pdf directly from Quark 5? Try exporting a pdf directly and save it to your OS X desktop (command + d in the export/save dialog box).

Let me know if this helps.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by command + d -- the only option I have in Export is "as a pdf". When I choose that, I can then choose the destination for the pdf file. I've tried choosing the desktop (and I can see all the other files listed there that are on the desktop, so I'm assuming it's the OSX desktop) and I've tried choosing a specific folder where I keep the Quark document, but still nothing appears. When the distiller is processing the .ps, I can see in the log that the destination folder is listed, so I'm not sure what's happening. I've done a search for the pdf after processing and it's not anywhere on my computer.

I didn't have this problem with 10.2.8 -- just exported as a pdf from Quark and it appeared on my desktop.

The other thread I was reading about this indicated that it seemed to be a problem with Tiger and Acrobat Distiller 5.0. The writer had to relaunch his computer in Classic ONLY to get the pdf to process through Distiller 5.0. That just isn't feasible for me. The only Classic app I'm using is Quark -- everything else is done with the Adobe CS products, so I can't be launching and relaunching back and forth from Classic to Tiger.

Thanks for the suggestion though! I really appreciate it!

Ah, I forgot! You can go to preferences in Quark 5 and set where you want your pdfs to be saved there. By command + d I meant "save to desktop". That's just the shortcut you can use in any save window to accomplish that.

Let me know if this helps a bit more.

Well, I didn't see anything in the preferences to change where distiller saves its files. (I was looking under 'pdf' in preferences) BUT I changed the setting from 'distill immediately' to save as .ps for later distilling. That way I can just export the pdf using the menu in Quark and once it makes the .ps (which it places on the desktop) I can just drag that onto my Acrobat 6.0 icon and distill it that way. Definitely faster than going through the print menus.

so thanks!!
