I sent this message to Quark Tech Support two days ago and have not heard from them. Your experts helped me before ... I'm hoping to find a QuarkXPress guru here!

Dear Quark Gurus,
*
I write, edit, and design textbooks, all in my home office. *I've used QXP since version 2.11, most recently QXP 4 on OS 9.2. *I'm now using QXP 6.5 on a Mac G5, purchased in August 2005 and set up in my home office in February 2006 (I really resisted switching to OS X), with 1.5 gb RAM, running OS 10.4.6. I am the only person who uses this computer, although I do have a little network in my house (cable modem, wireless router) so my husband can access the Internet and print from his iMac next door.
*
I am just learning my way around OS X, so I'm not equipped to troubleshoot. *Any assistance you can provide will be ... wonderful!
*
My issues are as follows:
*
1. FONTS. Am I correct in assuming that for hi-res printing, I must still use PostScript Type 1 fonts, and not the TrueType/OpenTypefonts that came with my new Mac? *All the books I've previously designed were in Adobe PostScript Type 1 fonts, some of which date from 1990. *I definitely want to keep using the same fonts I've always used. *But I'm concerned about font conflicts. *I can't get the Times.dfont out of the System-->Fonts folder, and have been warned that I shouldn't. *I'm also having printing problems (see #3 below.)

2. CRASHES. (This is really scary!) Just about every time, when I pull a particular entry (an arrow, or a text box with arrow attached -- I use these as electronic Post-It notes, and I use them quite often) out of the Library, I get the little eyeglasses icon, and Quark crashes. This makes no sense to me at all. What am I doing wrong?
*
3. PRINTING. I am using a Hewlett-Packard color LaserJet 3500, directly connected to my G5 as a Bonjour printer. *When I print pages, some of the type in Times and B Times Bold (PostScript fonts) is run together or irregularly spaced. *This happens mostly on lines I've tracked at -1 or -2. *But it also happens occasionally on lines with zero tracking. *I have never had this problem before! But when I print out a PDF of the same page, with fonts embedded, everything is perfect. Why?
*
4. CREATING PDFs. When I create a PDF, Quark informs me that the fonts Zapf Dingbats, B Times Bold, and BI Times Bold Italic--all PostScript Type 1 fonts I installed in my Users -->Janet --> Library --> Fonts folder -- may be corrupted and Courier substituted. However, according to FontBook, the fonts are fine. And when the PDF is created, none of the fonts has been changed to Courier. What's going on here, and how do I stop the error messages?

Many thanks, in advance, for whatever insights you can provide.

Cheers,
Janet

Hi Janet

I can't help you with the quark issues as I don't use it but here is a link to a comprehensive guide to font management in osx.

There is a section that shows how to remove fonts from the system and replace with your own versions.

I'll reopen the post for other techs to help you further

Howdy! Graphic Designer here with 13 years experience. Haven't used Quark in two years but I do know a few things for you to do to improve your chances of getting your work done.

* Fonts: It's best to load your user fonts (non system necessary fonts like Times and Verdana) in a different directory than Library/Fonts. Keeps font confusion at a minimum. Don't try to move or deactivate any system fonts; you'll have issues.

* Crashes: have you repaired permissions yet? First do the lite version: apps/utilities/disk utility/repair permissions. If that doesn't work do the heavy duty verison: restart with your Disk 1 system disk (don't reinstall OS X); go to File/Open Disk Utility and Repair Disk.

Make sure your internal hard drive isn't more than 50% full. You will suffer performance loss with a full hard drive.

* Printing: Have you downloaded any latest drivers from hp for your printer? Since you are in Tiger 10.4.6 your printer's software may be too old. hp.com

* Fonts: Try loading a different Times font if you have it (but don't deactivate the system times font. Use Type 1 fonts and not True Type fonts. Many True Type and "Free" fonts don't have postscript printer files that you need to RIP your pdfs and print. Make sure your fonts in question have a font icon. If they are blank your font is corrupted.

If you have Extensis Font Doctor use that program. If not, you might need to pull new fonts from your system Disk 1.

* For pdfs, make sure you don't place any illustrator or psd files with text as fonts, make sure they are all outlined (save two copies of all these files

Not to be flippant, but have you tried InDesign? It's a much better app these days. But, since you are in Quark as your workflow, I hope these steps clear up the problem. We have more to try if not.
