Just tried to re-open a document that I saved this morning and was greeted with 'This is a multiple language version and can only be opened in QuarkXPress'.

Can this be fixed or shall I just cancel all my evening's arrangements and start the whole job again from scratch?

I'm using 6.5.

Howdy!

There's a tech on here called CaptainQuark and it doesn't look like he's available...if he tells me he wants this question I'll hand you off to him, but I'm the next best thing. (He'll love me saying that since we have a friendly InDesign vs. Quark debate going on...)

First, duplicate your quark file. Where does it reside? It sounds like a basic case of file corruption, but I'd make a copy before you start trying to open it. Also, and this is hindsight, I always make BUJIC files (Back Up Just in Case) of all my mechanicals in case of corruption.

This thread on macosxhints.com might help you. It says if you duplicate the file and open that new file, it gives you the option of turning off the multi-language option and then you can open the file. This user has 6 and is trying to open a 4 file, and maybe it applies to your situation:

Let me know if this helps.

I'm afraid that didn't work.

I'm going to come in to work at the weekend and redo the whole thing in InDesign and make this the final end of my long relationship with Mr Quark!

I couldn't agree more (though I still recommend duplicating all your mechanical files).

Remember you have to save your Quark 6.5 files back to 4 in order for InDesign to be able to open them. If you have Quark 5 also, this shouldn't be an issue.

Also watch out for vector images when you convert; for some reason they get converted to overprint and need to be relinked in entirely new boxes.

You'll love InDesign.

Thanks.

I've been told it can't convert Quark grads either so watch out for that one folks!!

Ew, hope you're not using quark gradients. Yuk.

Shall I close this thread?
