Description:
Greetings! Just upgraded to 8.5.1 from 7.5.5 on my Performa 6200. I have two annoying problems: 1) I can't play videos or listen to audio. The browser tells me that Quick Time or Real Player is not available. However, both Plug-Ins are located in the Netscape Plug-In folder which is in my On Line Service provider's apps folder? How can I get Qucik Time to work? 2) When attempting to open a site from Sherlock, I get the following message "Unable to open your web browser because an unexpected error occured". Before I trashed IE, IE would launch automatically from Sherlock, except that I would get unreadable (non English) characters after the IE had fully loaded. How do I get the site that I have selected from Sherlock to launch successfully? I appreciate your help.

Hello Wesley,

First of all, QuickTime requires more than just a plug-in. There are five extensions. Videos should playable using Apple Video Player (v1.7.2 is the latest version). I believe that was included with Mac OS 8.5, if I am not mistaken.

If you need to re-install Apple QuickTime you can do so from the same CD-ROM. In order to upgrade it to QuickTime Pro it is necessary to Register your version, which you can do online. They send you an electronic code (via e-mail) to unlock it.

I am not sure how you were launching your browser from Sherlock although Sherlock can do searches using your modem as long as your modem is set up properly. As far as I know it will not open broswers. Are you using FreePPP or something like it to connect. And, are you using TCP/IP?

In closing, I want to add that a lot of inquiries are coming from people who are trying to install new software without remembering to turn off virus detection software and all extensions, before the do it. That can screw up your files on the hard disk.
