The Quicken that was prepacked with my iMac 266 is an upgrade edition, and it won't run. Is this correct or should it have been a regular edition?

No, it shouldn't be an upgrade version, it should be
"Quicken for Macintosh Deluxe 98". The full version. If you're sure you have an upgrade version, call Apple. This is part of the software package for all iMac's.
