loyal mac users...

I'm having trouble using quicktime 7 and vob files, i have over the weekend purchased and downloaded the mpeg-2 codec from apple and can successfully watch the movies, however i can't listen to them.? after much research on the apple website and google newsgroups i found that this isn't so much supported....

THIS CAN'T BE TRUE IS IT???

If anyone has had success watching vob files in quicktime using the mpeg-2 codec please help..

Thanks

Ashby, welcome to macosx.com

I do not know how Appl's mpeg-e codec is supposed to play, but could you have a try to the free VLC player (www.videolan.org) to view you vob files: if VLC plays sounds, we're sure that the VOB files are good and that the problem is on the QT side.
VLC is so powerfull (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/features.html) that I never use Apple's built-in DVD player and related codecs.

Philippe

Thanks for the response, i have vlc installed and everything works perfectly, i get outstanding sound and pcture quiality from vlc, quicktime on the other hand again outstanding picture, just not sound!!??

i agree with your post regarding vlc, i myself find it amazing...my problem is that frontrow dosen't support (atleast i'm not aware of it) vlc...i have all these movies and want to watch them from my tv with a mac mini, instead of on the computer in the office..

Well, I understand that your issue is wider than simply bypassing QT and related codec. I do not own FrontRow, so I re-open the question.
Good luck and thank you for using macosx.com

thank for your post, i'm not that familiar with frontrow either...all i simply want is for quicktime to open and play vob files with sound?! i tried that mpeg-stream lastnight and didn't have much success, i mean it encoded /exported my movie with sound but i wasn't that impressed with the results...

i gues i'm just going to have to keep looking for some software to suite my needs.

Why not skip FrontRow, connect the Mac mini to the TV, and select the TV in VLC as the video device?

that would work, except i love that interface from frontrow, not needing anything but the remote...it would be nice!

You might want to use a utility to convert your VOB files to QuickTime-compatible formats. Try OpenShiiva, e.g.
