Hi Mike,

Instead of trashing the app, let's try to "ace" this another way. I want you to locate these files: com.apple.quicktime.plist and com.apple.quicktimeplayer.plist

Here's the path: MacintoshHD/Users<-your Home Folder/Library/Preferences. Open the Preferences folder, locate those files, drag them to the Trash, empty the Trash and reboot your iBook. Now try to launch QT.

If it still gives you trouble, post back and we'll dig a little deeper. Ummmmm.... I noticed in your profile that you have 320MB of RAM. That is barely sufficient to run the newer versions of software, inlcuding QT. If your iBook allows for expansion, you might consider more RAM. And, with only a 9.36GB drive, make sure you have at the bare minimum, 15% free hard drive space. Open any Finder window. At the bottom it will indicate free drive space available. If it's less than 15%, free up drive space.

Thanks for choosing Macosx.com!

Mike,

Something just dawned on me. You're trying to launch iTunes from the Dock and it goes nuts. Do this... drag the iTunes icon off the Dock straight up. It will just go "poof" ... it might just be a corrupted alias which is all Dock icons are. After you've done that, locate this file using the same path as before:
com.apple.dock.plist Trash it. It's just a Dock preference file and when you reboot your iBook will create a new file for you.

Don't try removing the update... Just download a brand new iTunes for 10.3.9, here is the link: http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/

Just run the installer. Hopefully it will install correctly. Let me know what happens... now can you help me with my slice LOL

Carolyn,
The itunes has been functioning normally--just the quicktime--even when i go into the apple site & go to the quicktime portion , it shuts down my browser--wierd or what--i will do what you suggested about the itunes in the morning--off to watch LOST--will be in touch tomorrow--thanks again.

PS--there is no cure for the slice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

whoa... I meant QuckTimePlayer, not iTunes, my apology. Just download and reinstall QT Player. Here is the link: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/mac.html You want the download on the left for 10.3.9.

And visiting the Apple site and viewing QT content automatically launches QT for you and that's why it's shutting down your browser. Ahhhh which browser are you using?

Thought you meant Quicktime--this computer is a backup to my G4 which has worked fine since the feb update other than the notice to reinstall the security file already done--i still have 5 GB of space on this old machine--I use Safari , Netscape ,Firefox & Opera depending on the web site--i have found that the collapse occurs with all browsers--removed the plist--reinstalled the Quicktime--tried opening it from the doc & also straight from the applications folder--still no luck.

all browsers are up to date.

I never had this problem until the Quicktime update a few weeks back--I used this app a lot .

Also have Flip4mac installed to get away from the windows media player--always worked fine --I even tried removing this to no avail , other than the windows media videos were working fine.

To top it all off , my slice will probably have developed a hook!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!--although good for a double dogleg.------------------M.

Ok... time to get out the heavy stuff. Get Onyx. It's FREE. Download it here:
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macos...ties/onyx.html
Onyx will empty all your browser caches, old log files, you name it... you've got a corrupted file in there somewhere and hopefully Onyx will get it.

Just download and install following the instructions. Then run Onyx... use the Maintenace and Cleaning scripts. Quit Onyx, reboot... try QT.

Ahhhh... did you try taking the alias QT icon off the Dock?

I use Flip4Mac also to keep my Windoze friends at bay with video streams and so far it hasn't caused any problems so maybe that isn't the culprit.

Let me know if you have any luck with Onyx. It's the best free disk utility program out there... I use it once a week without fail.

A double dogleg hmmmmm... depending on the fairway LOL

I did download onyX--didn`t look close enough--will not work with 10.3.9--only tiger--I can use it on my other machine fine--as i say , i do have Mac Helpmate & have run that--also have Macaroni which i have run automatically.
Will download an earlier version for panther & try that in am.

I did remove the alias & downloaded a new version of Quicktime--still no luck!!

Carolyn,
i did download OnyX for Panther--ran everything I could think of--did maintenance & cleaning--reboot--tried to open Q from apps--same result--I tried to look at the crash logs for quicktime--went to choose quicktime from the list & said it could not be done due to an apple script error.

bummer !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am still lost in the wilderness................. mike.

Apple Script error? I'm not sure about that but let's try this.

Go to your System Preferences and click QuickTime. Click the Browser tab, then at the bottom click: Empty Download Cache. Might be a corrupted file in there... and while you have the SP window open in QuickTime, make sure you have everything set up properly.

Let me know if that helped.

Hi, this is how i have it set-up---browser..have checked off the PLAY MOVIES AUTOMATICALLY--I do not have the SAVE MOVIES CHECKED--(i did check it to empty cache ---streaming..have on automatic & have ENABLE INSTANT ON checked ---advanced..have DEFAULT SYNTHESIZER on quicktime music synthesizer TRANSPORT SETUP on auto & ENABLE FLASH checked off MIME SETTINGS--have all boxes checked off

Q still will not work--not sure what else to try--the older version of the player did work fine if that helps--i should never have done the update i guess--I have not been able to even go back to an older version because after I think I have removed the new version it stops me because it says a newer version is still there--I am too dense for words!!!!!!!!

Is there any way to just go back to an older version??--on my G4 i just use CLEANAPP to remove the app i want to get rid of--i have not been able to find any app comparable for the panther.

thanks for all your help & patience--------------------mike.

HI Mike

How big of a deal would it be to erase and reintall 10.3.9? Clearly, there is a file(s) on your drive that's keeping QT for launching and I think the only way to eradicate the sucker is to erase and reinstall.

There are some other apps on the net to remove applications, but they are all for 10.4.8... I looked far and wide. And it looks like all your preferences in QT are set correctly.

Here is another shot at this... I won't give up LOL Apple has a REinstaller for 10.3.9 for QT 6.5.2. Trash whatever QT you have on your drive, (do a search... get rid of anything QT) Here's the link:
http://www.apple.com/support/downloa...cktime701.html

Maybe that will do it.... my fingers are crossed ;-)

Carolyn :-)

Hello Carolyn,
I have bad news then good news--bad news is that the 6.5.2 would not install
good news is that i did an archive & install of original panther & after putting back in the updates, all is fine!!---YAHOOOOEEEEEEEEEYYYYYYYYYY.

This ate up a lot of my remaining space--I will go in & remove useless lnguage files , etc--love the onyX--will dump some my other maintenance programs.

Thanks a ton for your patience & all your help--may see you on the links & remember that a slice is 90% mental--of course it is that 10% that is skill that is the killer-------------------------------mike.

Mike,

I'm so glad this worked out for you. When you're dumping files you don't need, check out the Receipts>Packages for printer drivers you don't need too.

You are so welcome... too bad an archive and install can't fix my slice ;-)

I'm closing this ticket but you need assistance in the future just remember us.

Regards,
Carolyn :-)
