QuickTime mpg dilemma:
On a Mac PowerBook which was running OS X.3 and was updated to OS X.4 with additional QuickTime update:
All .mpg movies (some quite recent but many dating back to 2001/2002) which used to run in QuickTime now give the following error:
Alert:
QuickTime cannot open the file: "*.mpg"
it is not a file that QuickTime understands (-2048)
All movies previously placed in PowerPoint files now will not run.
Although the movies won't open in QuickTime, they will in iPhoto on the upgraded laptop.
I moved the movies to another Mac with OS X.3 and the latest QuickTime (7.0.3).
Nothing works. Not even iPhoto.
On a third Mac with OS X.3 and an earlier incarnation of QuickTime (7.0.1)
Nothing works.
On a pc the .mpg opens fine in WinDVD and can also be placed in and run from a PowerPoint file.
I found on this site:

quicktime error -2048? this message pops up when i'm trying to play an mpeg movie off of a dvd. i don't know exactly what kind of mpeg it is, but i figure the quicktime player should be able to play it. any thoughts?

Response & Follow-Up
Hi Ben
Error number 2048 is the "No movie found" error. That would suggest a bad encoding. If the mpeg was encoded wrong, it will not play, and that would suggest why you are getting error 2048.
Or, without the MPEG-2 Playback Component (a separate $20 purchase from Apple) QuickTime can't "play" MPEG-2 files.

Any ideas?
thanks much,

Hi Maura :-)
After reading your post and Ben's reply I skipped over to Apple and sure enough... Ben's got your answer. Here's the link:
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/update/
Looks like that component is necessary to getyour older (2001/2002) QTime movies up to date with Tiger.
If have purchased at some point Final Cut Pro, you can get the QT update for FREE.
Seems to me $20 is the way to go to get your movies going again.
Carolyn :-)
