I'm a recent owner of a imac G5 and I'm finding downloading software a hassle compared to a PC. My question this time is why does my latest Quicktime, which came with my new Mac (not Pro) work only sporadicly, sometimes it works, but not well, and other times I'm sat looking at the icon waiting for something to happen, finally giving up. I'm trying to find how good video on different digital cameras are on Steves Digicams camera page. I also like to click on some of the short news streams in CNN. I tried downloading media player, when I clicked on the icon to install. It asked me what application to open it. I didn't have any of these problems with my PC. I should be able to download click on application and away we go just like my pc. I'm a pensioner. Please give me a step by step if you can help me. - Thanks

need a bit more information to help you here. Quicktime opens most, but not all files you will run across on the internet. Chances are you are coming across a lot of Windows Media and Real movie files. For example, CNN uses Windows Media Player, so Quicktime isn't involved at all.

I just downloaded a fresh copy of Windows Media Player, and I'm not sure why it's not just using Stuffit Expander automatically to open it, but that's the program you'll need to select extract the installer. (.sit is just like .zip, sort of). another icon will be created, this is the actual installer. So, when you download and click on it, and it asks what application to open it with, select "Stuffit Expander".

don't forget to install RealPlayer (http://macupdate.com/info.php/id/8428) too

and while you're at it, lets make sure you have the most recent versions of:

Macromedia Flash (http://macupdate.com/info.php/id/4783)

and

Macromedia Shockwave (http://macupdate.com/info.php/id/513)

without knowing what sites are giving you problems, this is all I can suggest. You said that QT files seem to sometimes work and sometimes not work, is this with the same file? Have you tried watching QT files from Apple's site (such as http://apple.com/trailers/) and see if any of those give you problems? Are all these files being accessed through the web browser? Are you having any bandwidth issues (speed of your internet connection, etc)? A few more example sites and I might be able to give you some more information.

Don't let this experience get you down, it's probably something really simple, and I think once we get this straightened out, you'll find that viewing multimedia on a mac is a very nice experience.

Thanks Ned S.
I downloaded Stuffit Expander no problem and Real Player also Windows Media Player for Mac. I've gone through all the prompts so everything seems installed but when I tried to open news video on CNN the same old plugin warning came up NO WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER DETECTED - GET THE PLAYER. I've downloaded this thing more than once. I'm about to give up. Thanks Ned anyway
