Hi, thanks for responding. I have QuickTime Pro but QT won't open the file, and I tried importing into iMovie, get an error there too. Only VLC will enable me to view it. It's already compressed, being mpg, but I tried stuffing it anyway and the file size remained 344.4 MB so I can't send it. I uploaded it to my public folder...my member name is katezephyrhawke. I really appreciate the help.

Hi and welcome back to macosx.com

If VLC can open it and not QTP, thats's mean that the mpg file is based on a video codec QT cannot natively understand.
The best thing to do is to converted to a .mov file understandable by QT (and related application ) by running a movie converter like for instance:

ffmpegx

MovieGate

Salut Philippe,

I have transcoded my mpg file to a flash format and downloaded the recommended player, but when I try to play it I get the message "there is no application to open this file." I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I just bought the MPEG 2 component that Streamclip told me I needed... I thought it was included with QT Pro. So we'll see if that helps. Any ideas about the flash format? And presumably this will reduce my 332MB file to something manageable for my iWeb website? I don't know how to put the player on it, or how to embed the player in the movie. I appreciate your help.

update: the $20 mpeg2 component is installed, I ran disk utility to repair permissions and restarted my computer. Streamclip still gives me the message that I need to install the mpeg2 component. : (

Well, in general, one say

for home playable DVD, iDdvd (default) 1' of movie = 70MB
basic burning tools, 1' of movie = 35 MB
for divx (medium compression), 1' of movie = 25MB

The more yopu compress, the more difficult a user will play it. So, do not focus your attention on a Web playable movie:
* offer a short, light and playlable extract (max 30MB)
* offer the full movie to download

Do you know why Streamclip will not recognize the mpeg2 component? I suppose I could edit the movie, but then it wouldn't have the same effect. You didn't answer my questions about the flash player, can you help me with that? Or are you saying it won't work because the file is too large?

thanks, kate

(1) mpeg2 component not recognised: I have no idea; do you try to convert the file without the mpeg2 component before buying it ? How do you know your file requires mpg2 decoding ?

(2) about flash, you certainly to buy encoder from macromedia but I have no experiences on this

(3) oh yes, 300 MB is definitvly too large for a fluid play through standard machine.

Mpg2 component
I still browse the Web for this issue
Find on a Italian forum someone which simply solve the problem by uninstalling / then reinstalling Streamclip (the guy trashed the prefs file of StreamClip)

Is the component well in
/System/Library/QuickTime/ ?

(this is the Library at the root level of you hard disk, not the Library under you Home folder)

These are the things I have in Library/QuickTime. I don't recognize the one I just bought from Apple. It was MPEG Streamclip that said I needed the MPEG2 component to transcode my file. This all started because I want to be able to show it to people without their having to download VLC. If I cut the 15 minute movie down to 10 minutes, would that be too large to show on my website? I wrote to the Streamclip people but they haven't responded yet. Are you French or Italian?

I'm French (Belgium)
Is there somewhere on the AppleSite or in the readme file with the downloaded MPG2 component a way to contact Apple helpdesk about ?
