I downloaded the new version of Quicktime and now I have no visual, just audio.
Thanks for your help.

What version of Mac OS X are you using? Have you run Software Update? You might need to manually download and install the latest combo update for your system.

Hi Ben,
I am using OSX 10.3.9
I am not sure what you mean to run software update. I thought I did that when I downloaded Quicktime.
I do not know how to manually download and install the latest combo update.
Thanks so much for your help.

I couldn't direct you to the appropriate update to download until I knew your OS version.
Here it is.
After you restart, open Disk Utility and click Repair Disk Permissions for your hard disk.

Ben,
I opened the site you sent and there is nothing there I can see that deals with Quicktime. I saw a download for Java and one for security.
Let me know. Thanks. Bill

The update I asked you to install doesn't necessarily update QuickTime. However, sometimes reapplying the latest combo update is useful for fixing this little glitches that occasionally crop up. Alternatively (or in addition), you could try reinstalling
QuickTime.

Hi Ben,
I downloaded the Java site and then ran the verify disk permissions. I still have no picture on Quicktime. Let me know the best way to reinstall Quicktime -- what site, etc. Do I need to remove any part of Quicktime that is now in my system?
Thanks a lot for all your help. Bill

Sorry, I think misunderstood you previously. The link to download the 10.3.9 combo update is at the top right, in the Download Details section. If you still need to try reinstalling QuickTime after that, you can download it from
Apple.

Will you please resend the site to download the 10.3.9 combo update.
Thanks so much.

The link is still featured in my October 20 response.
Here it is again.

Hi Ben,
I downloaded the combo and reinstalled Quicktime and I still only have the audio, no picture. So, now what do it do???
Thanks.

I suppose it's worth asking what you're trying to watch? Is this something you watched on the previous version of QT with no issue? What kind of file is it?
I've seen this type of AV glitch with some AVI movie files. I prefer
VLC for most of my video playing needs.

Hi Ben,
I am not tied to Quicktime. Actually the only time I believe it opens is when I may be viewing an adult site. I am open to the program you mentioned. How do I get it and how then would I get everything from Quicktime off my Mac? Thanks a lot for your help.

You can get VLC by the link I included in my last message. You can't uninstall QuickTime; it's required by your Mac for the audio and video cores of the system. However, you can Get Info (File menu) on any type of video file that you want to open by default in VLC, choose VLC (after you install it) in the Open With section of the info window, and then click Change All to make this change for all files of this type.
Now that you mention the context in which QuickTime opens, it sounds like it might have something to do with Windows Media content. Is that true? If so, you might need to install/reinstall/update Flip4Mac, the QuickTime component that allows you to view Windows Media Video. You can download from
here, and follow the instructions to install.
