I installed Leopard (10.5) in October and have had Time Machine running fine.

Recently I had to re-install Leopard, choosing the option to save all my existing settings.

Since the re-install, Time Machine appears to start, but never actually completes a backup - when I look at it in System Preferences, it says "Preparing" and creates the date-named folder on the backup disk, but never gets to "In Progress".

Any ideas?

I'm thinking about blowing away the entire Backups.backupdb directory on the backup disk on the theory that Time Machine is trying to do a full, rather than incremental, backup and isn't finding the room to do that.

Thanks in advance.

I do not have a definitive answer for you on this one, but someone else might. It seems as though other people are having similar problems with time machine not recognizing its own back-ups. Because of this, if you do not have any important information backed up that you do not have now I would suggest to gather that information, erase the backup directory and try running time machine again.

Sorry I can't be of more help, but if you do try this approach please let me know who it goes.

Good Luck,

Stephen

Thanks.

I dismounted my time machine disk, mounted an empty disk and told time machine to do use that and it started a full system backup. So that sort of confirms my theory that it wasn't finding the room to do a full backup.

Now that I have a good backup on the extra disk, I dismounted that, reformatted the original time machine disk and am currently in the middle of a new time machine backup.

So go ahead and close this one.
