Hello,

Well I finally made the switch from Windows to MAC! It's funny b/c I grew up using a MAC and then switched to Windows b/c that is what schools taught and well now I'm going back to my roots...

Okay so I obviously need to take a crash test on using the various features but my specific question is when I download something, the icon pops up all the time on my desktop, which is fine however it pops up on the right-hand side of my desktop. I would like to change this so that all my icons on my desktop are on the left-hand side. I realize I can physically move them to the left-hand side, but I'd like for the computer to do this automatically. Can you help me figure this out?
I am learning to use Final Cut Pro and my teacher tells me that it is easier if the dock is on the right hand side of my desktop. This is good but then that is why I'd like to have my icons/downloads automatically go on the left-hand side.

Thank you!
Much appreciation!

Hi Tim,

Mac to Windows and back to Mac, huh? Welcome home!!

You can set your browser to download files to wherever you want. I have created a folder called "Internet Downloads" in my User Account Folder and I have set all of my browsers to download directly into there rather than have loads of downloads messing up my nice, tidy desktop.

To do that, make yourself a folder in the location you want to send all your downloads to and, in Safari, open up the prefs and, under the "General" tab, you will see a drop-down menu labelled "Save downloaded files to:". Select "Other" and then navigate to the new folder you have just created. Any other browsers that you may use will also allow you to do the same thing.

As for having your desktop icons on the left…

Well now, tut tut! You have just returned to the path of wisdom – so go with the flow. Leave your icons on the right, where God intended! ;-)

Seriously, though, I don't know of any way of having them default to the left-hand side of the monitor. I suffer from the opposite problem. I have set up my PC at home to look exactly like a Mac, and often have to shuffle desktop icons over to the right. It's what you're used to, I guess.

If you find that your dock is getting in the way, have you tried using the auto-hide feature? Just right-click in the dock and select "Turn hiding on".

I have a single monitor on my home PC, so I have the dock auto-hiding at the bottom. At work, though, I have a dual monitor setup, with the dock permanently displayed on the right of the right-hand monitor.

Hope that helps!
