Big trubs! My iPod is playing up. Don't think it's a battery run-down thing as can still read calendar and contacts - plus background light! However when I [try to] play tunes, the tracks don't play but skip past each other until I'm back to the main menu.

Have tried preferences but with no luck.

What I do get is when I try to update through iTunes on my G4 iMac, I get a 'can’t write/read to disk' error [this appears at around the 700th track out of 1500]. (I do use the hard disk to download docs to and from work).

There is a locked padlock icon at the bottom of the iTunes window, if this means anything!??! I've tried Command-I and unlocking application and iPod.

I’ve also tried to re-install software from CD but with no luck.

I'm now stuck!

Any ideas --- please!

Cheers

You can reset your iPod (I don't know exactly how, because it's a bit different for each iPod but the information is available at Apple's info doc pages). This will erase any customizations you've created. When you then sync it with your desktop your music on iTunes will be transferred.

I am more concerned, though that your hard drive is dying. The life of iPod hard drives is considerably shorter than that for laptop or desktop drives. You might want to try to reformat the drive with a drive utility that will map out bad blocks (try Disk Utility first).

Before resetting as in para 1, please make sure you have copies of any irreplaceable files (other than music files) on your desktop, another drive, CD/DVD or flash drive, because the reset will delete those files.

Hi Ishan

Many many thanks. Tried second option [disk utility] and am up and bopping again! Why didn't I think of that? Doh! Fingers crossed, the drive will last me a bit longer.

Cheers again
