Description:
When I recieve e-mail with enclosures, usually from friends using PC's, upon clicking on "enclosure" from the task bar and pulling down, I see "(application/octet-stream document)". On release of the mouse button a dialog box reads "A helper application for this enclosure could not be found. Do you want to save to disk? (Yes or No)". I have tried saving to disk and running them. I can view text using MoviePlayer but cannot view a graphic. Please tell me what I need to do or what application I need to view text a page at a time and to view graphics. I'm not sure I have supplied all the information you need but will reply if asked to furnish added information. Your help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hello. My name is LarryD from No Wonder and I'll try to help you with your problem today.
A lot of the difficulty in dealing with attachments has to do with knowing what application the attachments were created in. Generally, you need to have an application on your Mac that is capable of viewing/playing/reading whatever the original source document.
For the most part, PC users identify the "type" of document it is using a three dot extension (i.e., .doc says its a microsoft word document).
Not every attachment can be read or used by every system. For example, many PC attachments are .exe files, and that means its an executable program for a windows machine. The only way you can use this file in any way on your Mac would be to run a windows simulator like Virtual PC on your machine. Without that, there's just no way for you to use the program (Just as a PC user wouldn't be able to run a macintosh appliction).
There are a number of good shareware programs available that can enable you to convert and view any graphic for example (get GRAPHIC CONVERTER at download.com for this purpose).
There is also good commercial software available that helps convert PC documents to equivalent mac programs. Its called MacLink Plus.
If you'd like to forward the attachment to me, I'll take a look at it and try to evaluate what program created it and what is necessary to view, convert it, whatever. Just send to

Hope this helps. I'll be glad to tell you more after I look at your attachment.
