My problem persists: Appleworks will not open when I scan using Readiris and want to edit the scan. I have reinstalled: Readiris, the Epson software, Appleworks, and Classic (including a clean install). The scanner seems to be working fine, and my scans will open with other apps, like MacJournal and DevonThink. Text edit is also fine. When I get to the point where AW should load, it'll open with the logo page, stay on the loading fonts page, zip through some other things it is loading, then closes and vanishes from the dock. I run Tiger 10.4.7 on my G4 tower.

Anyone have any suggestions?

The problem with AppleWorks not reading the Readiris Pro OCR 9.0 output has been noted in a couple of online reviews. Are you using Appleworks 6.2.9? Have you tried reinstalling Appleworks?

I have a feeling that the Readiris folks aren't going to spend a lot of effort on this, simply because Appleworks is used by very few people (compared to Microsoft Word for Macintosh) on a regular basis, and because, as you noted, other WP will also open the file. I'm not saying that's right, but that's the impression when I talked to their rep at MWSF in January.

HTH and please let us know what happens. Thanks.

Hey, ishan, thanks for getting back to me. To be honest, I cannot recall whether I reinstalled 6.2.9, so I tried it this morning with my X disks, but couldn't figure out how I could reinstall just Appleworks. Even the custom install seemed to want to do more than that. How do I reinstall that program?

Thanks.

There is a so-called Appleworks 6.2.9 "update" on Apple's download pages. In fact, it's the entire program. Just run it (don't delete Appleworks first) and it will replace basically everything.

Thanks for the suggestion. When I downloaded the updater and tried to open it, I got this message: "It appears that a US version of AppleWorks 6.2.9 or later is already installed in the specified Update Location." What does it mean? I checked my hd for something that seemed like it might apply, but couldn't find anything. What's next?

You can remove the receipt for the previous Appleworks app install from your Receipts folder. The downloaded Appleworks will then install. If that doesn't make sense, just copy Appleworks onto a flash drive or whatever and delete Appleworks from your drive. Also delete the Appleworks .plist file from your Preferences folder. Use Spotlight to find and anything on your drive with "Appleworks" on it and delete everything (if you're worried, make a copy of items you're deleting on a flash drive, etc.).

Then install Appleworks from the new installer.

Your alternative is to use a program called Pacifist (shareware) to extract the Appleworks installation .pkg from the install CD/DVD that came with your Macintosh (assuming it did, probably so unless this is a PowerMac). Then let Software Upgrade upgrade your install to 6.2.9.

HTH and please let us know what happens. Thanks.

Yikes, is it me or is this whole readiris thing way more complicated that it should be? But I thank you for your help, and I will begin exploring your instructions tomorrow and get back to you.

HTH??
