I have installed Real Player 10 for Mac OSX. When I tune in to BBC radio, I get the following message The page “BBC Radio Player” has content of MIME type “application/x-mplayer2”. Because you don’t have a plug-in installed for this MIME type, this content can’t be displayed
I am using Safari version 2.0.4(419.3)
Is the necessary plug-in available on Safari? If so how do I install it?

Richard,
I had the same exact problem and realized that when installing Real Player it does not write over the older version of the plug-in.
First, download the Real Player 10.1 from here:
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/8428/realplayer
Now before you install, go to Hard Drive>Library>Internet Plug-ins
Locate and trash the RealPlayer Plugin.plugin file
Next, go to Home>Library>Preferences and trash the following:
com.RealNetworks.Data
com.RealNetworks.RealPlayer.plist
Next, go to Applications and trash the Real Player file.
Now empty the trash, quit Safari, and finally install the fresh download.
Give the BBC Radio a try and see if it now works. You may need to deselect Block Pop-Up Windows.

Cheryl,
Thank you very much for your prompt response.
I have followed your instructions. I am able to get BBC radio but I still get the same message. Do I just click OK when it comes up and ignore it?

Richard

Richard,
There are probably a few settings that need to be adjusted. I went through these on my machine to make sure of the correct settings.
Go to System Preferences>Sharing and click on the Firewall button.
Scroll down the list and see if Real Media is listed. If not click on New.
In the window that opens type in these options:
Port Name: Select Other
TCP Port: 554
UDP Port: 554
Description: Real Media
Click on the Okay button.
Close the system Preferences window.
Now go to Applications>Real Player and launch it. (click twice)
When it opens, the player window should be in stopped mode. That is okay.
Go to the RealPlayer Menu and select Preferences
Click on the last icon - Media Types
Now in small print it says Select the media types that you want to play using RealPlayer. Immediately under it is a box with Show private Real Player types.
Click in that box.
Now the only things that you do not want checked is QuickTime movie and MPEG.
If you had to select any, you will need to click on the Save Media Types. Then Allow RealPlayer to quit your browser (Safari).
Once that is done, you will need to go to the Utilities folder (from Applications folder) and select Disk Utility. When that opens click on the second icon in the side bar at the far left, then click on Repair Permissions.
Do not worry about what is shown in the activity box. Once done, quit Disk Utility and give the BBC site a trail run.
Let me know how you do.

Cheryl,
Thank you very much for your quick and detailed follow-up.
I am afraid that despite following your instructions exactly, I am still getting the message.
However, I am able to listen to the broadcasts so I do not think it is worth pursuing any further.
Once again thank you for all your help.
Regards,
Richard

Richard,
There is one more thing to check. In System Preferences>Sharing>Firewall create a new port to open.
Use TCP port 80
UDP port 80
and name it Stream
Open Real Player and go to the RealPlayer Menu and select Preferences.
Click on the Connection icon and correctly set your connection speed.
Now give it a try.
If you still get that error, it means that the web site did not get created with multi platform users in mind.

Cheryl,
I am afraid it still comes up with the message.
Thank you very much for trying so hard.

Richard,
Does the BBC site recommend Real Player or can you use Media Player? If you can use Media Player get Flip4Mac. That works smoothly and just might work.

I am sorry I could not be of more help.

Richard,
I found something interesting on the BBC help site.
Windows Media Player 9 is only available for PowerPC based Macs. If you would like to view Windows Media streams on an Intel Mac you will need the Windows Media Components for QuickTime, available for free at:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win...omponents.mspx
Some of the BBC's older clips do not work on a Mac; we are fixing them.
So..... Don't get the Media Player - just get the Flip4Mac, you should be able to see the video.
