I am assuming you held down the power buttoon for four seconds and forced the computer to shut down.

If so you should try resetting the PMU

holding down the power button for 4 or 10 seconds for that matter, did nothing.
the power light is on dimly as if I've put the computer to sleep. It does not shut down unless unplugged. I have replugged and tried holding c as i pusherd the power button, again, nothing.
same results with ctrl option shift
ctrl option eject

any idea what might work?

what is PMU?

PMU is the Power Management Utility button, and the settings can become corrupted, resetting them might fix your peoblem.

Holding down C will start from CD, so if there was nothing in there...

Followthis link and follow the directions toward the bottom, which describes resetting the PMU for your model...
