What is the best way to rebuild my desktop. I tried holding down the apple + option keys while starting the computer. This didn't work. What is Trash 1.2.1? I read this is one way but I didn't want to buy new software. My computer is running slower and I thought doing this might help. I'm not real computer savy but am trying to learn so any information you could offer would be appreciated. I do need things explained step by step.

Thank you for your time.

There is no desktop rebuild in OS X. OS X is not the same as the Mac OS it replaced. If your computer seems to be running slower it could be for many different reasons. Since you haven't provided any information on your hardware configuration and version of OS X, it would be difficult to know what things you might do to resolve your problem. So, I'll throw out some things you can do:

1. Visit www.thexlab.com/faqs/faqs.html and read the faqs on system maintenance and performance.

2. Download from versiontracker.com or macupdate.com one of the several maintenance utilities such as Panther Cache Cleaner, TinkerTool System, Onyx, CocktailPE, Control Freak, Yasu, etc.

3. Use the utility to run the system maintenance scripts, clear caches, etc.

4. Shut the computer down for a few minutes, then restart.

5. For additional maintenance do the following:

Boot from your OS X Install Disk 1. After the installer loads select Disk Utility form the Installer menu. After DU loads select your OS X volume from the list on the left, click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.

If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

6. Read the following for additional information:

Hope some of the above is helpful. In addition to the above adding more RAM to your computer along with a larger and faster hard drive will also make things faster. OS X needs a lot of RAM. I would recommend not less than 512 MBs. I would also recommend a large and fast hard drive. Forty to sixty GBs, 7200 rpm, 8 MB onboard cache, Ultra-ATA if your computer supports it. Good drives are more expensive than bad ones and fast drives are more expensive than slow drives. Personally, I prefer Seagate drives.
