It was my understanding that Mac OS 10.3.8 is able to automatically open and read documents in Hebrew and Chinese when they are sent in those languages. How can I do this? I am not able to do this in Explorer 5, but can in Safari. I am not able to do this in Word. When I get a Chinese doc, I can manually convert it by changing the font, but it leaves out some characters. I can not read Hebrew docs at all in Word (v 10) and do not have a Hebrew specific font in my Font folder in Library.
What do I need to do to be able to read the docs sent in Hebrew. Do I need to make setting changes and where. I thought the system automatically had appropriate fonts for this but can't locate them.
thanks.
Have you tried Mellel?

again it is my understanding that OSX has this ability and I am wondering if I need to change some settings -- not buy new software
The OS X supports foreign language viewing, but not all apps provide for that support.
I mentioned some other apps, because they are both quite capable editors, with dictionary support and etc. for a large number of languages.
TextEdit, which comes with your OS X, can display text and symbols in multilingual documents by using Unicode, a worldwide standard for encoding multilingual text.
TextEdit can also open documents in encodings other than Unicode. Choose File > Open and choose an encoding from the Plain Text Encoding pop-up menu.
You'll find that some software has a text-encoding, or Character support selection, usually under the Edit or View menus, that can allow you to select other languages, or choosing Unicode is sometimes a possibility.
Microsoft Word is pretty limited in that area, although you can check under the Tools menu for Languages
With Internet Explorer - under the View menu, choose Character set.
Open your Mac Help, and type Language Support - and you'll see some other information that will help you with this.
