1. Could you please enlighten me on...
(I am making a touristic brochure for a large village in France (I'm english and I live here permantly)
....MY G5 bipro was finally delivered 2 weeks ago:
First it took a long time to download web pages and would freeze, made not funny noises, until a notice appeared saying the clock is set at a date before 2001..I reset it=no more prob.....
Then graphic converter freezes, the rolling forever ball appears, refuses to close down, I have to unplug the G5......
I transfer images from my minolta quality raw into the G5 via transfer d'images as i-photos doesn't accept Raw.....then, strange noises, screen goes black, wierd images slide slowly acoss the sceen, notices appear and disapear before there is time to read them.etc.....
So now hopefully with the noisy components changed there will be no more problem??

2. Also : I payed them on the 17th of February and they tell ma I have to wait a month for the G5....the money was out of my account by the 24th of february, the G5 arrived in a sligtly bashed box with the invoice date: 4th March! They said that the G5 was in the stock room 2 months ago....
I have asked them if I am intitled to have Tiger at a small adition to the price.
They say No...Can you possibly help me please this query, if and who I could contact directly?

Thank you
Jan.

Jan,

My name is Cheryl and I will be assisting you.

I am not sure if I understand your first question. Do you have the G5 back yet? The problems you experienced does indeed sound like a hardware problem. Once you get it back, you should see an improvement with it. While this is not normal to get a new machine with trouble, Apple does adhere to the warranty.

As for your second question, you will not be able to upgrade to Tiger unless you purchase it at the retail price. Apple's policy on an upgrade is good only if you had purchased a computer after April 12.
"If you purchased a new Mac on or after April 12 that didn’t include Tiger, you can upgrade for just the cost of the media."
I am sorry, but your purchase does not qualify.

Jan,

What program are you using to open your photos?

Have you repaired permissions since you got your machine back? Go to the Utility folder and open Disk Utility.
Click on the second icon at the far left, then click on Repair Permissions. Repair Disk will be grayed out.

When done, quit Disk Utility and give the photo a try.

Thanks again Cheryl......I am trying to do what you have said but although I am English unfortunately all my 'logiciels' have to be in French.so .....I have opened ('preference système') then when opened I have clicked on the (CD et DV disk) where I have: 1.("A l'insetion d'un CD d'mages"= i-photo.) 2. ("ouvrir une autre application") 3. ("Executer le script")... or 4.("ignorer")....
(Also please what is best.....do I recuperate Graphic converter or Aperçu from 'ouvrir une autre application'?
I must say I do have the possibility in my PC to easily compare my photos in order to first bin the unfortunate ones/chose easily from the rest and even have a better close up for the detailes all in either TIFF or RAW or whatever....What is the best to use or buy so life is easyer in sellecting and eliminating photos while showing them at the same time to the members of the town hall?? ..This is apart from the fact that I am havn't found sorry 'Repair Permissions are yet.....I'm not going to turn this macine off for a while now......awaiting your reply thanking you again Jan. PS why do apple over here not want me to have Netscape saying that it causes havoc.....

Jan,

I will try to be as simple as I can so that you can understand - I did not take French in high school - and if I did- that was many many moons ago.

Graphic Converter is the best out there. I have used it since it first came out.

When I attach my digital camera to the computer I have it set for iPhoto to open. This way, all my pictures are in the iPhoto library and I can go back to two years ago if need be.

You can set CD/DVD to open iPhoto. The latest version (4.8) is very nice. And in iPhoto you can create a new folder, drag and drop the photos you want from the thumbnail side to the folder. Now click on that folder, and at the bottom of the iPhoto window click on slide show.

You now have a great slide show to show everyone. If you have a CD burner, you can burn a CD with your pictures also, creating a slide show.

It is best to use .jpg for your pictures. Raw makes the image a very large file and so does .tiff And .jpg can be opened on any computer and is recommended to use for web sites.

http://cheryl.macosx.com/gallery/orchids2

This is only part of my collection of images - all my orchids. They are all .jpg and have not lost their details.

You have not told me which program is causing the freeze when you open a photo.

.....Have been cracking up over this machine/have no idea why it froze up/I am definately appreachiating your help/....Your photos are very nice and sharp so.......why when I was happy enough with my photos on my Minolta 5mega pixcels that a friend 'Graphiste' says to me that I must use RAW, at that time I didnt know that i-photo was not going to take RAW, After understanding that....and...as my G5 is on its way back to the technition.....I carry on in...TIFF..and as I obviously do want maximum definition just in case I have to play around with the photos (I prefer instant good photos to hours of 'bettering the photos') being frightened to go back to jpeg. SO......THEN.....AS i-photo takes TIFF I copy my Tiffs from CDs from my PC (Mac wouldn't lend me a Mac to work on) into i-photo......What I do have..is...HUNDREDS of photos in RAW which I am painstakingly, through PHOTOSHOP, saving them ONE BY ONE in TIFF simply so that I can put them into i-photo so that I will be able to show them to the people I am making this brochure for and share with them the 'choosing of the photos'...+...I do not know why sometimes the colors are rearly horible but 'as time is now precious' I keep them with the intention of explaining that I do have a better one somewhere...grrrr. My questions are :
1.- Is there any quicker way of getting these HUNDREDS of RAWs taken, into i-photo EASYER ?
2.- Should I give up or maintaine taking photos in TIFF in the future if some of these photos could end up as largish posters?
3.- Have you anything to say about 'Aperçu' (the icon with the 2 phots and a magnifying glass).
4.- With 'Transfer d'images' (the camera icon) would you say it is better to transfer directly rather than use a card reader like ScanDisk for exemple?
5.-On the hard drive I have 'Applications' then 'Utilities' then 'Disk Utility' then 2 hard disks one 233,8go maxtor 7y250mo and HD so as you can see I still havn't found Repaire Permissions to click on yet.....'
I am now going to have a coffee befor 'Save As' one by one in Photoshop for these hundreds of photos in order to get them into i-photo, unless you have a better solution....Thank you again Cheryl, Jan

Jan,

I will answer your questions below:
1.- Is there any quicker way of getting these HUNDREDS of RAWs taken, into i-photo EASYER ?
I found EasyBatchPhoto which should do what you need.
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/12190

2.- Should I give up or maintaine taking photos in TIFF in the future if some of these photos could end up as largish posters?
Tiff should be fine for what you want to do.

3.- Have you anything to say about 'Aperçu' (the icon with the 2 phots and a magnifying glass).
That is Preview. I will open images and pdf files, but that is all. You can not edit the image. It is handy when you just want to view the image before you decide to keep it.

4.- With 'Transfer d'images' (the camera icon) would you say it is better to transfer directly rather than use a card reader like ScanDisk for exemple?
This is your own preference. I use a card reader at times, and at times I connect the camera to the computer. Either way does not matter.

5.-On the hard drive I have 'Applications' then 'Utilities' then 'Disk Utility' then 2 hard disks one 233,8go maxtor 7y250mo and HD so as you can see I still havn't found Repaire Permissions to click on yet.....'

You need to click on the second icon at the left. That would be HD. Once you click once on it, you then will be able to click on Repair Permissions. Repair Disk is at the bottom far right. That will be grayed out. To the left of that is Repair Permissions.

Hi Cheryl,It is 7 in the morning here......and I have found and clicked on "Réparer les autorisations du disque" on my G5......Will let you know...... I am sending my mail from my I-mac but I will send you a copy of the wierd images that crossed the screan once I connect back to the G5 but as my priority was these photos..and ..now......after spending many hours of 'Saving As' into tiff in order to put them into i-photo.....I now have :
1.- photos that are in TIFF that are in a folder but WILL NOT GO INTO i-movie ?!
2.- Collecting some of the JPEGs from other folders inside i-movie so that I have what I want in the same place....I have some very chewed up images.
3.-some photos stay as an 'Aperçu' 'Preview' icon.....why is this 'Aperçu being used/why do they stay as this icon...perhaps I was too tired yo understand after many houres of 'Saving As'.....
I will defiately look at the other application for dealing with photos in a moment after my 'waking up' coffee.....i-photo is not what I seem to be looking for and I have waisted so much time and getting very upset for an end result being : a mess that I can't use anyway...the application in my PC was just so coherent....I don't undestand....yet....? Jan,

Netscape 7 is garbage. You do not want to use that on your G5. You can use Safari, FireFox, Internet Explorer, or Camino.

ACDSee is for OS 8.6 up to OS 9. It will not work on OS X.

The icon for those pictures is created by iPhoto so that Preview/Aperçu can open it to view it. In other words, it is the icon that the system uses.

EasyBatchPhoto is a $25 shareware.

Graphic Converter is a $30 shareware. With Graphic Converter, once you pay the shareware, all future updates are free. I do not know about EasyBatch.

You can give Graphic Converter a try before you decide to pay the shareware fee. And it does come in a French version. :-)
http://www.lemkesoft.de/en/graphcon.htm

Are you importing the photos to iMovie correctly?

Open iMovie
Click the Photos button.
Choose an album from the pop-up menu. (iPhoto album)
Select a photo from the photos displayed in the Photos pane and drag it to the clip viewer.

At last I am on my G5 and able to contact you from it.
I am rerly sorry I wrote i-movie instead of i-photo all my problems are with i-photo and nothing to do with i-movie ...so if I rephrase that :

Jan,

What version of iPhoto are you using? How are you importing the images to iPhoto? How did you get the RAW images on your computer?

Hi,
- My vesion of i-photo is: 5.0.2 (258)
- I open i-photo and import.....
- Going back to my very first query at the top of this page :
.......(".Then graphic converter freezes, the rolling forever ball appears, refuses to close down, I have to unplug the G5......
I transfer images from my minolta quality raw into the G5 via transfer d'images as i-photos doesn't accept Raw.....then, strange noises, screen goes black, wierd images slide slowly acoss the sceen, notices appear and disapear before there is time to read them.etc......").
- Yesterday just as I thought that perhaps Graphic Converteur ( which came with the G5) is perhaps a better solution... it crashed and I had to pull the plug out...again... I am going to look at it in a moment.
- All I need is something now where I can compare my images side by side... in not so 'tiny fiddly' little images that I get with i-photo.. ........Strange as in-i-photo you can enlarge the bigger image under the row of small ones but you cannot enlarge the row of the smaller images so that you can see them properly and compare them in just a bit bigger size........or can you?.......or /is there anyone who does?........(sorry but whatever came with my widows XPP has understood).
- Doing an F10 in Photoshop......is not either rearly what I'm looking for as I (sometimes we) just want to quickly see and keep and / eliminate or file 'unwanted for the moment' images.......before doing anything else.
Thanks again Cheryl, Sorry about all this......

Jan,

You probably have an older version of Graphic Converter. Trash the one you have presently. (just go to Applications and drag the Graphic Converter to the trash). Then download and install the one from here:

http://www.lemkesoft.de/en/graphcon.htm

I also think the trouble is with the RAW format. Using the latest Graphic Converter just may improve things as I noticed that it has been updated to improve RAW data imports.

You will be able to do all you want to do with Graphic Converter 5.6.1

Thank you.
This does seem like a good option.........
- I need my graphic converter in French and to pay in € rather than $ and as my G5 was supplied with V5.4.1........ :
1. what price do I pay for what is an update of what Apple has already put into my G5?....... I can only find the full price for someone who does not yet have Graphic Converter........Is there a Mac page that offers the possibility to click and update this GC......?.....Perhaps I'm too tired and I can't see it.......Sorry and Thank you again. Jan,

I don't think you need to pay for it since you already have a working copy on your machine.

Just download the French version, then trash the version you have (just drag the Graphic Converter from the applications folder to the trash), and install the French version.

Then start up the French version.

Hi Cheryl,
- Impossible to get a correct reply on the web to your phrase :
("I don't think you need to pay for it since you already have a working copy on your machine")..............
- If only I could :
("Just download the French version, then trash the version you have (just drag the Graphic Converter from the applications folder to the trash), and install the French version. "Then start up the French version. " )...............
If only it was that easy..........already there is a problem with netscape then there lots of info onabout paying....etc......
- I have just mailed the question to Mac over here......Will be back in touch to let you know what they say over here.
- Please if you have a site where I can download the french version EASILY on to my G5 I would very gratefull.
Thanks again. Jan
