TICKET ARCHIVE -> Recoup Dvd Burning Error?

I am a newbie delighted to find this site! A convert from PC land, I may expect too much "intelligence" from my new iBook G4 and Superdrive, but here's my problem:

I have 1000+ digital photos on my harddrive. Sunday I bought five imation DVD-RW disks (4x) able to hold 4.7GB each and I figured just one of them would take care of my back-up needs for quite a while.

In reading about using iPhoto's DVD backup and burn program, I learned that the resulting DVD (or CD) would be usable only via iPhoto, but that seemed okay, so I proceeded.

Being cautious, I thought I'd save just two photos as a trial run. Result: two photos backed up to a DVD which now is registering "full."

I assumed iPhoto and my iBook would note that the DVD target was -RW, not -R, and save accordingly. I was not asked to specify.

Two questions: Can I re-format and re-use this DVD or have I wasted a somewhat expensive resource? If so, how (step by step, please)?

Second, how may I avoid this error in the future?

Thank you, wise volunteer, whoever you are. -- Bob

Bob, welcome on macosx.com

(1) When you burn a CD/DVD, at the end of the process, the burner closes the CD/DVD, i.e. it says that nothing more cannot be burned on the DVD.
So either your burn 5k or 4.3G of data, the DVD is closed and will show "full" or "0 byte free"
This is by the default the case if you do not prepare the CD/DVD to receive further data after the initial burning, i.e if you do not prepare the CD/DVD to be a mutlisession disc
..and yes, I know, there is a special option in Nero for Windows for preparing, by default, each new burned disc to be multisession....

(2) to burn multisession discs from the Finder, here is a good guide
http://macs.about.com/cs/osxbasics/a/burn_sessions.htm
I do not know how to burn such CDs through iPhoto, because I never use multisession disc

(3) Why ?
1. because CD/DVD-RW are so inexpensive that I prefer to use rewritable ones that spending time to prepare the first burning to expandable, ...
2. but because if the 'i'th burning on the same CD/DVD fails -for every possible good or wrong reasons-, all the CD is out !
3. multisession CD or DVD made on Mac can fail when played on PCs or vice versa.
4. all the sessions are mounted on the Desktop with the same generic disc name: so, if you have 20 of them, how can you easily browse to discover in which one you have put your new bought car photo !

(4) to wipe -and then re-use a DVD-RW, insert the DVD in the optical drive, launch Applications/Utilities/DiskUtility, select the DVD on the left, then erase on the right
Select a either a "quick erase" or a "full erase" (wipe and zeroed the DVD..useless..)

(5) Caution:
* most of the CD_RW or DVD-RW are built to be re-used between 20 and 50 times. Even if they make advertissement, none of the RW media can be re-used more then 50 times. Normal CD-R/DVD-R cannot ensure a lifetime backup of your photos, RW stuff are worst on this point
* Even if most of the home CD/DVD player states they can play RW stuff, be carefull, some of them cannot : it is specially the case of car CD player !

So, Bob in summary:
* point 4 explains you how to wipe a RW media
* do not spend your time with multisession disc: burn 10 or 5000 photos on a DVD-RW, enjoy the DVD and then re-use it later.
Multisession facility was great some years ago when a CD-R was around 3 or 5 $ piece ;-)

I hope I have answer all your questions.
Regards
Philippe

Thanks, Philippe! With your help, I have now successfully burned a DVD and backed up my hard drive. I'm especially grateful for the instructions on erasing the disk first and for the tip about
http://macs.about.com/cs/osxbasics/a/burn_sessions.htm

Rachael Smithey is my new hero.

With help like this, I may actually become somewhat competent with my MAC. Thanks again. -- Bob

Happy to have helped you on this point and, moreover, that you'll be able to find your ownway to the solution: that's my final goal.
Please apologize my -not so good- English, but I'm native in French.
Thank you for using macosx.com and enjoy your new mac
