I am having awful trouble trying to reinstall my Epson Perfection 1650 scanner on my iMac OSX 10.2.8.
N.B I wiped the hard drive as the multi-coloured spinning disk kept coming up and things were getting very very slow - and I reinstalled everything.
I've downloaded the driver alright but when I put the scanner software CD (from Epson and came with the scanner) it says it has to be installed in Classic.
Even when I've tried this, there's no sign of the scanner anywhere. Previously the scanner just appeared amongst the other OSX apps.
There were hideous problems reinstalling my HP deskjet 5550 printer too as the downloads would stop when 99% there. Hugely frustrating.
Thanks for any help you can give,
Denny

Your scanner is "old" (in computer terms) and the disk that came with it has drivers that won't work with OS X 10.2.8. Please check the Epson web site and download the drivers specifically for your scanner model, then install them. Epson has a very odd installation method, so it is easy to get confused. Then, just to be safe, restart your Macintosh and make sure your scanner shows up in System Profiler (an app in your Utilities folder, either under USB or Firewire, depending on how it's connected to your Macintosh). If it does, you should be OK scanning. See, e.g., if it shows up as an option when you open Adobe Photoshop or Photoshop Elements as a choice in the "Import..." selection in the File Menu for these apps.
As an alternative, you can use Image Capture, one of Apple's own apps to capture images from the scanner and then use whatever program you want to manipulate those images.
HTH and please let us know what happens.

Thank you very much. I followed your advice and the scanner is working fine now. I don't want to ditch the scanner yet as it's working well but I will need to get another printer before long and after all the frustrations with reinstalling the printer and scanner I'll be extra careful to get something that's super compatible with a Mac. Any suggestions? I am using an HP deskjet 5550 (ink cartridges sssooo expensive) & I do a lot of photo restoration and text.

I think Canon, Epson and HP all make great inkjet printers (if that's what you want); I've never really had any problems with Canon or Epson in terms of support, except that some years back, Epson never came up with drivers when System X first came out. Which specific ones would depend on your needs and budget. Glad things worked out otherwise.
