Description:
Over time something has stepped on certain parts of my hard disk and some programs do not work any longer. For some reason I can no longer access the ability to fax directly from the computer as I used to do. I reinstall the system software but there is no difference. I would do a custom install of just the fax portion if I knew what that was called on the system disk. How can I get this capability back into my computer?

If you have the disks that came with your Mac, you probably have a fax program lurking on one of them. What usually happens to programs that no longer work is a corrupted file or preference file. Before giving up on the program altogether, go to the system folder and open the preference folder to locate the program pref. Throw it away and try launching the program. Sometimes this helps tremendously because the program creates a new pref file at the launching.
We have a similar problem where I work with GroupWise mail. It throws an -43 error code and I know I will have to trash the prefs before it will launch again.
Also make certain the program has enough memory allocated to it. Go to the program icon and click it once. Do a File, Get Info and a window will open. Increase the Preferred Size by 2,000 or 3,000K. Then increase the Minimum Size to at least 25% more than the Suggested Size.
This often helps on programs that freeze or refuse to open.
