I have a colleague who is trying to connect to my G4 Power book over the internet and we are using OSXnvc without success. I have established that the problem seems to be port forwarding but I can find no useful instructions to set it up. Can anybody help please?

Hi John
Are you using a Router? or Firewall?
If you are, Port 5900 needs to forwarded to your machine.
If you're using a Router, go to the Routers setup page, you manual will show that. It will be through a web browser. Go to the Forwarding section. Forward Port 5900 to your machines IP address, which would be something like 192.168.1.x
If you're using OS X's built in Firewall, open the Sharing PreferencePane, click the New Button, on the Port Name drop down menu, select VNC.
Put 5900 in the TCP Port Number field, click OK and close the System Preferences.
Your colleague would use your external IP number to contact you and that would be forwarded to your machine.

Thanks Bob,
My computer is plugged directly into airport extreme wireless. Is this what you would classify as a router? Or am I being dumb?
I have tried what you suggested in preferences. I was advised by my colleague (who is now away for a few days) to check whether I was accessible by keying my ISP and the 5900 port address into my browser area. Unfortunately I am still unable to make contact. Is his suggestion for testing access correct ie via the browser?

John
Open AirPort Admin Utility, located in Applications/Utilities.
Select your base station and click Configure.
Enter the base station password if necessary.
Click Port Mapping.
You need to forward port 5900 to your internal IP address.
Download DockIP from here;
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/9193
This will show both your internal and external IP numbers.
Once that's done, your colleague would only use your external IP address to contact your machine.
You can download a manual for reference here;

Thanks again Bob.
I have followed your instructions exactly and unfortunately I still cannot log in.
Am I doing things the correct way testing the connection via http?
In other words to see if the connection is valid I am entering http:// (my isp address).9500
If this wrong then that is obviously why I cannot connect.
I have sent on all your suggestions to my colleague so he can check if he is doing things correctly at his end.

John
VNC doens't use a browser.
If you want to give me your IP address, I'll see if I can see your machine.

John
I'll need a user name and password to check this connection.
I seem to be getting through, (c211-31-49-212.rivrw7.nsw.optusnet.com.au), but getting an authentication error.
