Hi. can I log in remotely to my home iMac? I'd like to "observe" my kids - without them having to click or allow. I have admin privileges (of course) and they don't. But they do know how to erase history.
thanks.

Hi Lori
Yes you can.
On the Mac at home, open the Sharing PreferencePane in System Preferences, under the Apple.
Click on Apple Remote Desktop to turn it on.
Click the Access Privileges.
You'll see your User Name. Put a check in that boz.
Check all the boxes on the right side except the last one "Show when being observed'.
Now on the work machine, download
Chicken of the VNC
You'll need to know the IP address of the home machine. You can see that in the Network PreferencePane under Show Menu-Built in Ethernet.
You can also see your IP address on this page;
http://www.whatismyip.com
On the work machine, install Chicken of the VNC and enter the home IP address and your user name and password and connect.
You'll need to be on a high speed connection to do this. Dialup would barely work doing this.

thanks so much - it does sound daunting. I would only observe from my iBook laptop when my kids are on the iMac desktop - so no worries about using a PC at work or something - I'm not neurotic, just cautious. my older kids are 12 & 15 and seem to know more about the computer than I do!

Comcast cable internet provider in the US changes the IP address daily every 24 hours.

I've had Comcast for 4 years and the IP address never changes on me.

I'm not sure what "Comcast" is - an Internet Service Provider? I use a high-speed DSL through the phone co. anyway, I haven't had any luck with the Chicken of the VNC yet. I didn't mention that I use an Apple Airport express - so my iBook is trying to connect to my iMac through the same Airport - does this matter?

You might need to forward VNC's port (usually 5900) on the Airport.
Run Airport Admin Utility and bring up the Express's configuration panel. Port forwarding is set up in the Port Mapping pane.
Your Help Menu will give you info on this through Airport Admin.

On the Mac at Home;
Open System Preferences > Network > Show > AirPort > TCP/IP
Make note of the IP address.
Then Setup Port Mapping on the AX.
Use the AirPort Admin Utility to make these settings:
Port Mapping tab
- Click "Add"
- Public Port: (for VNC, should be 5900.
- Private Address: (the IP Address you made note of)
- Private Port: <5900>
- Click "Ok"
