Hello I have installed "share my desktop" server software on a mac 250 miles away, The isp they have comes in on the phone line (not dial-up) service.High speed lite (they call it)
On my home mac ( cable service) I have set up a client software package called "Chicken of the VLC" I am able to connect to the remote computer. I get a new window with a black screen. It then it turns into a lot of different colors. Very nice but the remote desktop does not show up on my mac. I have verified that my mouse is working on their screen but no desktop. I have tried changing the resolution on both computers to 256 colors but I then get an error message and disconnect.
It is important that I can troubleshoot this mac from home because the user is a newby and then some.
Can you please offer any suggestions ?

Thank You

Hi Colin

Instead of using Share MY Desktop, download and install OSXvnc on that machine. It will work much better.

You can get it here (free);

http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/16699

If the phone ne conection is slow, not much more than dialup, it won't work much better than Share My Desktp, but give it a try.

What you're seeing, black screen, lots of colors, is normally caused by two slow of a connection.

To use Remote Desktop programs, you need high speed, Cable/DSL

Thank You Bob for your speedy reply.
I will try your advice with the alternate piece of software.
I guess if the connection is too slow, that's all I can do until my family member upgrades to a faster service.

Regards

Colin

Colin

My pleasure.

Let me know how the OSXvnc works, although with a slow connection, it most likely won't be much better.

Also, if behind a router, ports need to be opened.
