I've been looking through my new iBook G4 as of recent and found that iDVD takes up about 1.5GB. I mean it's a nice program and all but I only have a 30 GB hard drive and I'm looking to possibly cut out some of the fat. I already have less than 10GB left and thats with very few of my files on.

Is there a (preferably) open source dvd player that has about the functionality of iDVD but not as large?

As a side note, is there any other obvious way to free up space besides dumping chache every so often?

You already have a DVD player (called DVD Player) which you can use to play DVDs (Doh!)
iDVD is not a DVD player, it is used to create DVD projects and burn those to a DVD.
If you have no interest in creating your own DVDs, then remove iDVD - you can always reinstall if later if you need to do that. Just drag to the trash, and empty the trash. If you look in the main /Library/Application Support folder - you'll probably find an iDVD folder, which can also be trashed. Don't forget to empty the trash.
One big way to release some space is to remove all the foreign language support files. Download and run Monolingual - http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/13031
Do you use GarageBand? That's another that takes up a lot of space, nearly 2.5 GB.

Thanks, that just saved me a gig and a half. The font remover saved me 150MB, while I stil saved half the fonts because I visit some non english websites. There wasn't an applications support folder or any file pertaining to iDVD though.

Earlier I had been looking through my iBook and found that it came with huge usless games, and demos. After I'm done typing this I'll go get rid of word, powerpoint, etc "trial run" software that came with the mac. From day 1 I've been using open office.

I checked garage band and the app is only 56MB although I'll look for any giant librarys or files in my home directory.

Thanks for the advice!

You won't find the really large folder for GarageBand in your home directory. It's in the main /library/Application Support folder (again, not in your home folder). Keep in mind that you have 3 Library folders. One in your home folder, one in the /System folder, and one in the main directory, which is where you should look. And one library additional for each additional user. Each Library will have a Fonts folder, by the way. Be wary of moving any fonts out of the /System/Library/Fonts folder - very easy to delete the wrong one, and end up needing to reinstall.
