The DVR-106 optical drive that came with my 1.8 dual processor G5 has failed (from reading various discussion threads, this is evidently not that uncommon an outcome). I would like to replace the drive with a Pioneer DVR-110, but it seems that there is not firmware available to make this drive recognizable by OS 10.4.3 as a "supported" drive when checked in the system profiler. Will this be a problem? Can I install the drive now and just wait for Apple to release a firmware update? I really want to avoid "flashing" the drive because I don't want to screw up and trash the new drive, and I am hesitant to use patches like Patchburn because I don't want to create problems down the line if and when Apple might provide a new firmware release. Any advice on what to do?

Thanks.

You should take a look at xlr8yourmac.com (especially their update compatability pages, which are easily searchable). If you install the drive, although the system may not support it, Toast will; you just won't be able to burn disks using system software. Flashing the firmware is not a big deal if you follow the instructions EXACTLY. In any event, I would look at other folks' experiences with the same problem and see if they had any problems. Another site you can check is OWC (macsales.com) which sells many Mac upgrades/replacements and has good tech information on their site as well.

HTH and please let us know what happens.
