TICKET ARCHIVE -> Replacing My Old Hard Drive.

I purchased a larger drive for my Power Mac G4. I am running OS 10.3.9. I attached the new drive as a slave (ATA 133) and copied all of the files over. Then I replaced the old drive with the new one. The G4 will not boot from the new drive. If I boot from the old one it sees it but will not let me change the boot disk to the new drive.
What can I do?

Do I need to boot with a CD and then copy the drive from old to new?

Thanks

Ken

Ken, welcome to macosx.com

(1) when you put the new drive in the place of the old one, are you (jumpers) it is in master mode ?
(2) how do you copy files from the old to the new; a simple manual copy does not respect permissions for the system; you need to clone the old to the new
For instance using CarbonCopyCloner
http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html
Or you can use the Restore (yes !) facility of DiskUtility to clone the old the new.

Good idea to check the jumpers. I had set it to master this time...

I will try Cardon Copy Cloner. I had just manualy copied the files so that is the problem.

Thank you so much for the help.

Have you used Intech ATA Hi-Cap driver? The new drive is 200gb.

Ken,
(1) manually copying files does not respect Unix permissions and prebinding for the System, so that's why a manually copied System will never be available for booting
CCC is a good tool; I used SuperDuper
http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDup...scription.html
Shareware, but more options fo specific backup actions

(2) No I never used this drive, nor drives with a so big capacity (yes, my G5 as an internal Seagate 250G).

Happy we both find a solution to your issue.

Have fun with your Mac and thank you again for using macosx.com.

I am not sure why it posted the questions again. Everything works great now.

I purchased the "Speedtools" package from InTech software. They have a good backup and cloning utilities as well as the "ATA-High-Cap" software. I used speedtool to defrag the drive, then add the the ATA-High Cap software. Plugged in the new 200 gig drive and partitioned it into two parts, one 70gig bootable with a 128 gig data volume. then I the Speedtools backup utility to copy over the files. Removed the old drive and everything works great.

If I have to boot from a CD or DVD I will only see the first volume, but I only use the second one for large final cut files.

Thank you again for all of your help. I hope this helps someone else too.
