Is there any way of getting this OS to remember that I'd kind of like to see more than 1/8th of the page when I'm navigating hundreds of files?

I drag it bigger, I zoom it bigger, I green button click it bigger.....but OS X steadfastly refuses to remember. Is it hopeless? If the window has scroll bars, it should be bigger so they are not necessary. I drag scroll bars hundreds of times a day. There has simply got to be a better way of viewing windows. For the life of me, I can't understand the thinking behind this. Do Apple engineers just love scrolling so much? It makes absolutely no sense at all. Incidentally, my resolution is 1280 x 1024. Its native for my LCD monitor so it cannot be changed. Not that it would help much in this situation.

If its impossible to control, please suggest a possible app that might be able to control window size.

I'm not sure if I can help you with the open/save window size, as mine seems to keep the size that I choose. I do occasional maintenance of the system by deleting *all* caches folders from the hard drive. This isn't really a necessary thing to do, but makes me feel better, and seems to make the system work more smoothly.
BTW, if you do try to trash all caches folders, your next step is to restart

I don't know about an app that controls window size (other than the Finder), but alternatively, how about a great app that gives you a lot of help with the open/save windows?

Don't get me wrong... I don't ignore faults, and sometimes struggle with computer problems, but Mac users have come up with a lot of wonderful stuff to make using a Mac special, and to customize your own Mac experience.

Once again you have a great answer and great recommendations. Many thanks....(again!)

You know sometimes I rant and rant, but the more I get into this, the more I realize the collosally difficult job it must be to get all this software to work together. I'm beginning to wonder how often features that seem to be consipicuously absent in OS X, are really absent because of conflicts and would be there in a heartbeat if it was possible at this point in time. Or maybe I'm just a nutball alone in his little world...lol.

Question: if I wanted to start to write the simplist of programs, where should I start?

I'm not a programmer at all, but I would start with AppleScript or Automator, which both come with OS X, then XCode, which is included with the OS X install.
