Right now I have a PC connected to the internet with Time Warner Roadrunner. I am expecting an Imac G5 to be delivered tomorrow. What do I need to do to have Roadrunner on Imac?
I called Time Warner and they said I needed to go by and pick up an installation CD; however, I have read elsewhere (this site included), that the software provided by Time Warner is completely unecessary, especially after you have the signal up and running (which i do and will). I hope this is correct.
So then, once I power up my new Imac, is it just a simple matter of plugging the modem cable into the back if the imac? Will some settings adjustments need to be made on the computer? If yes, what are they (and please keep in mind that I am a complete newbie when it comes to the MacOS)?
Thanks.
I am running all Mac's with my Time Warner Cable - RoadRunner Service. No Problem - no CD required.
I believe that when you turn on your computer for the first time - it will run a set-up program that will ask you questions such as how you connect to the internet and do you have an email account, etc.
The computer should automatically connect you to the internet after you complete the initial set-up. Safari is the Web Browser that Apple provides.
To manually set up the cable modem to ethernet connection - go to the apple menu in the top left corner of your screen and select system preferences from the menu. Next click on the Network icon.
From within the network preference pane select ethernet and make sure the setting for "Configure IPv4" is set to "DHCP". That's all you need to do.
If you use RoadRunner for mail - your mail preferences (under the Mail Program's Mail menu)should be set for a "POP" account. In NC my incoming mail server is:
pop-server.nc.rr.com
My outgoing mail server (SMTP) is:
smtp-server.nc.rr.com
Again I believe the initial run through of the set-up program will be all you need to get on RoadRunner.
Congrats on the new Mac -
Cheers,
Rob
