I have a media Gear 4 slot Card reader that I use for Compact Flash memory reading from my digital camera. On insertion, the card shows up on the Desktop as a little portable drive icon.

Today, on inserting a Compact Flash Card in to the reader, the portable drive icon has mysteriously been replaced by the PowerPoint 'P' icon!

What is going on?!

I know its nothing life threatening but the machine has recently had a complete erase and restore to cure some crashing problems - I hope this isn't a bad sign....

G5 iMac 1.8Ghz, 250Gb Hard Drive and 1Gb RAM
OS 10.3.9.

Many thanks in advance

HI Paul :-)

My name is Carolyn and I will try to assist you with your tech support issue.

A Gear 4 Slot Card Reader for Compact Flast Memory... ok, is this a USB 2.0 connection? And the portable drive icon is acting strange... ok... does your Gear 4 require a driver?

You have the G5 iMac which is fairly new, under warranty? Just in case you need to take it in for repair??? I don't think you will need to do that but it's nice to know if that is an option.

It sounds like the USB driver for the card is corrupted.

First thing I would do if it were me, is to run Disk Utility and Repair Permissions. Disk Utility is in your Applications>Utility folder. Launch Disk Utility, select the Macintosh HD in the panel on the left, then click the Repair Permissions button. Takes about 1 minute to run. Quit Disk Utility.

Now, locate this file: com.apple.finder.plist
Here is the path: MacintoshHD>Users>Library>Preferences.
Open the Preferences folder and locate com.apple.finder.plist Drag that file to the Trash, then empty the Trash. It's simply a preference file that can get corrupted when using any Finder window in the Mac OS. nex time you open a Finder window your Mac will generate a spanky clean preference file for you :-)

Make certain since you erased your drive that you have all of your system software updates. While online, click the Apple logo and then click, Software Updates. A window will open and Software Update will check to see if you have any available updates.

I think you just have a cranky icon problem. Have you by chance downloaded a file from someone that was created by Microsoft/PowerPoint software??? That can cause a problem such as this.

OK... run Disk Utility, check for updates, trash the finder.plist file and post back and let me know if anything made any difference when you load your card ???

Thank you for choosing Macosx.com for your tech support needs.

You truly are a God!

I followed your instructions and 'hey presto!' - problem solved....

Thank you so much - I'll certainly recommend your site to my Mac buddies.

HI Paul,

Well I can honestly say no one has called me a god before, especially in the tech support area, but thank you so much.
I'm sure my boss checks our "feedback"...

Anyway... I'm glad the problem is solved. Macs have always had "preference" problems since way back and even in Tiger 10.4.3, there are still some glitches. But we have figured out a lot of the tips and tricks to help people.

I've been to Vancouver... beautiful area!

Carolyn :-)
