Okay, so I have an iBook G4 and just recently set up a netgear wireless router model WGR614 v6. Sometimes it doesn't connect to the network. Also, the network that was intially set-up for the router doesn't have a password that I know of because during the setup of the network, my computer's internet signal was lost. SO there is the damn network that keeps popping up in my airport window that I can't get access to cause I don't know the password.

Another piece to this complex puzzle. My roommate who has a macbook pro has always been able to access several different networks, some of which were password protected (or PSI ??) After setting up my network, he was unable to access any of the old network names he knew because all the network names were different.

SO I guess this is what I'm asking, Is it possible that I renamed all of those networks and have accidentally made them password protected? If so how do I delete all of the networks that are on my router to insure that I only have 1 network on the router, my network?

Ryan,

It is possible that your setup when you first connected the router did not apply correctly. Your router does indeed have a password for the setup page.

The router username is always admin
The default password is password or (for older routers) 1234

Here is Netgear's help page for your model:
http://kbserver.netgear.com/products/wgr614v6.asp

Did you install the McAfee security software? If you did, that could be causing the problem.

Let me know if you need more assistance.

ey Cheryl,

Thanx for responding. SO let me RE-ask. Since I've emailed the initial question, I have done something else. I've reset the router and now the network that was working isn't there anymore. I tried to re-setup the router by connecting 1 ethernet cable from the modem to the router, and 1 cable from the router and the computer. It went to this screen and said it was working but when I tried to go wireless, my computer didn't pick it up. I just don't see why, If I had reinstalled why it would work again.

thank you

ryan

Hi Ryan,
It's kinda important for you to understand that you are our eyes -- I/we can't see what you are doing and what your setup is, so it's very important for you to give us all the detail and to not change too many things without telling us.

To start, what router were you using before this one? Or were you connecting direct to a modem? DSL or cable?

It's impossible for you to rename other networks. I guess you mean wireless networks you can see from the Airport icon at the top of your desktop? Is it possible your roommate has a newer macbook with Wireless "N" capability (you don't)?

I was not using a router before the one I have now. I was connecting directly to a modem DSL. My roommate does have a newer Mac: It is a MAC BOOK PRO. SO yes, I'm assuming that he does have the Wireless "N" capability, I have an Ibook G4 from like '04 or '05.

SO the network my friend set up intially was in the process of creating the signal or whatever. But when the computer was suppose to generate the temporary password for the network we created on my router, my wireless signal faded so we lost the site and now we have no idea what that password is. Even though I have reset my router, the network I was able to pickup is gone, but the network I just told you about, which we never got the password for, still pops up with wireless security. I have tried "PASSWORD" and I have tried "1 2 3 4" but to no avail.

I have tried to reinstall the router but my internet wont work so it hasn't happened. AGHHHH!!!!!!!!!

Thanx

RYAN

Ryan,
I have that exact same router. It works fine. I don't understand what it means to "generate a temporary password for the network we created." I don't understand what reinstall the router means. Can you just follow the manual and skip all these "terms?" Like using username "admin" and password "password" (lower case) to login to the router?
Start with no security and come back later and add WPA. Make sure you set the router to authenticate to your ISP using PPPoE (Does your internet connection require a login = yes).

Okay, So LIke I said, I have tried all of the following passwords and usernames that you have listed, AMIN and PASSWORD, in lower-case, upper-case, with an exclamation point, in GERMAN, in JAPANese, IN SPANISH AND FRENCH: BUT TO NO AVAIL. LIke I said I have reset the router and there is a network that I "CREATED" or my router found or however the router "talks to the computer" appears on my computer saying that it is available but it needs a password. I have tried "PASSWORD" "password" and the password that I entered when I tried to enter the WPA. When I was entering the information for the WPA and it asked me the password I wanted, I entered my password. Above the spot where I entered my "Desired" password, there was a password Netgear had given me. WHen I hit okay, I lost my wireless connection and I wasn't able to see the next page or observe the password it had formulated.

Ryan,

In order to get back to your router's setup page, you are going to have to connect to the router using an ethernet cable from the router to your computer.

You then can reset your wireless password. What I think you are referring to is the WEP password. The default password for wireless WEP should be on the label at the bottom of the router unit.
