i am trying to make safari load pages faster. i am attemting to do the following:

Dave Hyatt made a post on his blog that describes a timer that Safari uses before it starts displaying any content. Supposedly the algorithm will be changed with the next release of Safari, but for now, you can still decrease the timer by setting a variable in Safari's preferences file.
Open Safari's preferences file at ~/Library -> Preferences -> com.apple.Safari.plist in a text editor and add these two lines somewhere inside the tag:

WebKitInitialTimedLayoutDelay
0.25
The default value is 1.0. Lowering the value will decrease the time Safari waits to render. Some side effects may be flashing page content as it loads, but it definitely feels faster.

[robg adds: Make sure Safari is not running when you edit the preferences file, otherwise your changes may be overwritten the next time you quit Safari. I added the lines immediately below the tag, and it seemed to work fine. Note that in Dave's post, he explains how this may actually slow real page loading times, but that perceived page loading times will decrease.]

Question is, how do i do this? (opening the file in a text editor)

Mark,

One of the most popular text editor is BBEdit Lite

http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/3693

TextEdit Plus is another

http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/5077

I suggest you use a copy of your preference file, not the original, so that you have a back up copy in case the adjustment does not work.

Mark,

Quit Safari
First, go to Home>Library>Preferences.
Go to the view menu and select by list. Now everything is in alpha order.
Scroll down to locate the com.apple.safari.plist file.
Click on that once.
Now go to the File menu and select Duplicate.
Right next to the original file will be com.apple.safari.plist.copy.
Drag the .copy file to your desktop.

Now go to the folder where you placed Text Edit.
Drag the com.apple.safari.plist.copy over the TextEdit icon.
Text Edit will start up and open the file.

Now scroll down until you see the tag

You will see
WebKitInitialTimedLayoutDelay
1.00

Change that 1.00 to 0.25

Now save the document. Quick Text Editor.

Go to Home>Library Preferences and drag the original com.apple.safari.plist to your document folder.
Drag the new file from your desktop to the preferences folder.

Start up Safari. See if it works.

Mark,

Do you have the web address of Dave Hyatt's post? I could not find it and was going with what you had stated. I do believe that it could be a different file that needs to be tweaked.

Mark,

While it does not say what version of Safari it works on, I noticed the article is dated from 2004 (last year). It states the the next up date of Safari will address the load issue.

What version OS X are you running? Some of the OS updates did include updates to Safari, which could be the reason why the WebKitInitialTimedLayoutDelay is not referenced in your preference file.

Since you do not have that reference, you can not change anything.

But, you can make Safari load quicker by emptying the Cache files. Just go to the Safari menu and select Empty Cache.

Mark,

You do have the updated version of Safari. Right now, emptying the cache periodically (I do it every two days) and your internet connection as well as the memory installed on your computer is what governs the speed of Safari.

I am sorry I can not give you any more hints to make those pages load faster.
