Hi there,

my Safari crashes on video.google.com when I click on a link while the video is playing. I have reinstalled Mac OS X Combined Update 10.3.9, used Onyx, repaired permissions - still the same.

Does this happen with everybody? Sometimes it crashes in Netflix, too.

Felix,

First, double check a few things.

Go to Hard drive>Library>Internet Plug ins.

You should have the following files listed. You also should have only one of each.

Flash Player Enabler.plugin
Flash Player.plugin
flashplayer.xpt
Java Applet Plugin Enabler
Java Applet.plugin
JavaEmbeddingPlugin.bundle
JavaPluginCocoa.bundle
MRJPlugin.plugin
NP-PPC-Dir-Shockwave
QuickTime Plugin.plugin
QuickTime Plugin.webplugin

If you have more than one copy of any of these, you get to trash the older version of the plugin. To find the version, click once on the file, then go to the file menu and select Get Info. The window that opens will give you the version number.

In Applications check to see if you have the latest Quicktime Player version. You should have version 7.1.2.

If you have done any changes to the plug in folder, you need to quit Safari, empty the trash, then start up Safari.

Give it a test run and let me know how you do.

Felix,

go back to that Internet Plugin folder (hard drive>Library) and open the QuickTime Plugin.webplugin [folder]. You should have in there QuickTime Plugin.webplugin with a strange block icon.

Drag that file out of the folder and directly in the Internet Plugin folder. Now trash that folder it was in.

Hi,

thanks for your help. I did what you suggested. I moved the QuickTime plugin, I trashed the folder, I downloaded Java again and installed the Java security update.

The problem is still the same.

Is it possible that the issue is with Flash and the latest security update for Safari?

Hi Cheryl,

the crash is reproducible when I go to http://video.google.com
then I play a video and while the video is playing
click on another - it starts loading the page and _always_ crashes.
It also does that when click on the Safari back button while the video
is playing.
It doesn't crash on my iMac with OS X 10.4.7 at work,
only at home with 10.3.9.
It also doesn't crash with Firefox.

Felix,

I was able to open two separate videos and Safari did not crash on me. But when I tired a third one, all three videos slowed down to a crawl as they tried to load.

It could be that you are selecting videos that are very large and taxing your computer's ability to load. When you select just one video and wait for it to load, does Safari crash?

Just to make sure of your system profile, how much memory do you have installed on your machine?

sorry I wasn't clear in my description.

There is no problem if I load several videos at the same time in different windows.

Only if I start a video and then click on a link to different video (while the other one is running),
which should open the new video in the same window,
Safari crashes 100% of the time.

Felix,

I tired that, and Safari did not crash on me. I do have the same Flash plugin and security update as you have installed.

Try this and see if things get better.

With Safari open, go to the Safari menu and select Empty Cache. (be careful not to select Reset Safari as you will lose all your bookmarks).
A new window will come up asking if you are sure.
Click on the Empty button.

Now go to the Safari Menu and select Preferences.
Click on the Security icon
Now click on Show Cookies
Scroll down the list until you come to video.google.com files.
Click on each one, then click on the Remove button.
Now click on Done,
Next make sure all the boxes under Web Content is selected.
Click on Tabs icon and uncheck Enable Tabbed Browsing if it is checked,
then close the preference window.
Quit Safari.

Now go to Home>Library>Preferences. With the Preferences window open, go to the view menu and select by list. This will put everything in alpha order.
Scroll down to locate

com.apple.safari.plist

and drag it to the trash. Empty the trash.

Now open Safari and give it a try.
Let me know if this corrects the issue.

Felix,

The next step is to use the OS X (10.3) CD to start up the iMac. Just insert the CD, restart the computer and immediately hold down the C key.

When it starts up with the CD, you will see the install screen. Do Not click on the screen.
Instead go to the Installer Menu and select Disk Utility.
When that opens click on the second icon in the side bar at the left, then click on Repair Disk at the bottom right.
Watch the activity screen. If it does any repairs - you will need to click on the Repair Disk button a second time after the first pass is done. The object is to make sure it finds all the problems and repairs them. You may need to hit that button a third or fourth time to get no references to repairs made.

Now click on Repair Permissions.

When that is done, quit Disk utility and restart the computer.

Give Safari a test run. Does it still happen?

The yahoo page is obviously using updated technology to work with Tiger's version of Safari.

Just remember to get the updates to 10.4 and the security updates, as well as Quicktime and iPhoto from Software Update in System Preferences.

When the updates have been installed and you have restarted, double check with Software Update in case it has missed anything, then use Disk Utility to repair permissions.

Since all is well, I will close this question. If you ever have another problem or question, do not hesitate to come to macosx.com.
