I have had an iBook for four years using Safari as my default browser. One day before this Xmas 07, Safari and Internet Explorer and Software update decided not to open when connected to the internet. I once got got a posix 54 error notice.
Firefox does not have this problem. I reinstalled OSX 10.3.2 from the reinstall discs and all the software, still no luck. I have spent the best part of three days trying to sort this out. Can you help please.
Thanks Derek Seagrim. London. UK.

Try downloading, and installing the combined OS X update that is current for your version of OS X. If you now have version 10.3.2, that would mean updating to 10.3.9. Here's a link to the correct download page.
http://www.apple.com/support/downloa...pdate1039.html

After installing that update (you will be required to restart), go to your Disk Utility, and repair your Disk Permissions.
Restart again after completing that. Try to connect to software update... If that works, then I would expect that has fixed your other problems. You will also find that there is an update for Safari, to version 1.3.4, If I recall correctly.
Come back here if your still can't connect to Software Update, and also still getting errors with Safari.
You have my permission to give up on Internet Explorer, as Microsoft has also given up on the Mac version.

Hi. Thank you so much for responding. My Mac already had 10.3.9 when the prob occured. I use AOL which is not the worlds favourite server. I did an archive reinstall followed by reinstalling the software but didnt erase the hard drive, and still I had the prob. So I wiped the hard drive in disk utility and reinstalled the original programmes. It now works perfectly. Tomorrow I will go to my boat where I have free use of wifi and down load all the rellavent software to update this great little Mac. You can treat it like you hate it & it still gets up & cuts the mustard as we say over here! Thanks again. Regards Derek
