Hello,

My macbook black bought new 2 months ago crashed when I was working in gmail. I was loading several mp3's to send a friend, Fairly large file. Safari crashed in the middle of loading up the email. When I restarted safari, and went back to my gmail account it seemed to be working fine. I tried to open and compose a new email. It spent a very long time working on that and would not let me do anything else in that window, I could not stop it to try and click on another function within that window. It would also not let me do anything on the tool bar at the top.

Tried to force quit the programs several times and it seemed to go in a loop without closing the program. I left the computer for a few hours to see if it just needed some time and still working on opening the email. Meanwhile my wife's internet worked fine, so the problem was not the internet connection. Finally I just shut down the computer by using the power button. Since no further force quitting worked.

Turned power on and Mac office wanted to update. So I let it update. Opened Gmail again to work on the lost email. I could load gmail but safari crashed after signing out of gmail. Opened Safari again and then tried to open gmail and the screen came up your computer must quit. Please use the power button and turn off. I did that and when I tried to turn the computer on the computer just beeps and does not start.

Any Ideas? Thanks!

Hello Brian

thanks for coming to macosx.com and I will try to advise and assist you.

Sorry to hear you are having problems with what should be a lovely new MacBook

I don't think the problem is as simple as just Gmail or Safari - and now it just beeps? By beeps do you mean the startup chime? or something less uplifting?

I suspect something quite unpleasant has happened...

I would like you to try starting from the Installer (put the disk in as you start the Mac and hold down the C key) then get the Disk Utility from the Menu and run Repair Disk and Repair Permissions.

IF that works all well and good - if not you could try an Archive and Install (Preserving Users and Settings), use the custom install settings to turn off all the unnecessary languages and printer drivers - it will speed the install quite considerably

If none of that resolves it (or you have further problems, particularly if related to Kernel Panics) I would contact Apple and make sure to get it checked out under your warrantee - repeated KPs are usually related to HW more often than not...

Thanks for the info,

I think you are right that something serious has happened.

The beep is not the pleasant start up beep. In fact the mac does not start but makes a harsh beep and the screen is blank.

I tried inserting the start up disc 1 in and holding down the c key and it continued to beep and no response. end up using the power button to turn it off. I tried a could different keys and combos with the start up thinking it might be the control key you were referring to. To no avail.

I did look up kernel panic which I did not understand and that is the message I had received before the trouble. I have had that message a couple times before. After turning off the computer everything seemed fine.

You mentioned that kps are related to "HW" but I do not understand what that is. Hardware? So most likely the hard drive?

I do appreciate your help and it looks like I am going to the Mac store today or soon.

Alas...

Thanks for the help.

Sorry Brian

Let myself get a bit ahead of the game there perhaps... but I do so many of these sometimes I forget that the reader might not have ever encountered such a problem before - mea culpa

OK - you have had the screen with a lot of languages telling you to restart before... This is not a great sign to be honest - that screen is a Kernel Panic (when something deep in the heart of the Operating System reaches a problem it cannot resolve and gives up... Called so because the heart of the OS is called the "kernel" and the error log will say "such and such failed/couldn't be resolved - Panicking now".

Such things should be very rare - if you have had more than a couple that tends to indicate something is more seriously amiss than it should be. In my experience this is usually HW (hardware, you guessed it right) related as opposed to OS or SW (operating system or software)

HW faults that cause repeated KPs can be related to RAM, Hard Disk problems, motherboard problems, and a slew of other things... If it is HW related be glad you have only had it a short time as Apple will fix or replace it

As it won;t boot from the Installer I would be inclined to push for a replacement...
