After downloading Safari 1.3.1 to my MAC OS X 3.9, I am no longer able to access Safari but can still access the internet using Internet Explorer. When I tried to access the recent plist--com.apple.safari.plist in Preferences there was an error message that read "No default application specified to open the document". I located two other safari plists -both agent -defaults and both dated June 23, 2004. I now remember having this problem in the past when I updated but then had phone help to resolve it. I know that changing the user name will not change anything.

What I can do to use Safari again? Perhaps it is best to to revert back to the earlier version, but I will need help in doing this.

HI Naomi,

I am a little confused and I'm sure you can clear it up for me. You said you
"downloaded" Safari ???? and you are on the Mac OS X 10.3.9 ?? Safari
comes preinstalled on 10.3, so I'm not sure how/where you downloaded Safari from?

If you are using Internet Explorer, that could be causing your problem. When using a Macintosh computer, you really have no need for any browser that isn't written for a Mac. Safari/Firefox... either one are great for the Mac!!

Ok.. you said you tried to access the recent .plist... for Safari.

Try this path to see if you can find it:
Macintosh HD>Users>Library>Preferences
Now... look for this file: com.apple.safari.plist If you have Safari on your Mac that file should theoretically be there. If you see it, drag it to the Trash.
Empty the Trash. Relaunch Safari.

If you can get Safari to launch, go to Safari>Empty Cache. Also, Safari>Reset Safari.

If nothing else, don't use Internet Explorer. It will only cause problems. Just use browsers written for Macs.

Hopefully something I've suggested will help. Please post back and let me know how you're doing!

Carolyn :-)

Dear Carolyn,

I am not certain why you responded the way you did. However, what I did not tell is that I upgraded from MAC OS 2 to OS 3 so that I could use Safari. It worked until I upgraded to OS.10.3.9 and then crashed. With help from Apple support by phone I was able to access Safai again. However, I was never able to use the Mail program again. It did work under the OS 2 system but then failed. If I did not use Internet Explorer I would not be able to access the internet at all so that your suggestion that I stop using it is inappropriate and somewhat naive. There are sites on the internet that to not accept Safari (e.g., American Airline reservations and LWV Legislative list). I am able to make reservations and obtain information only when I use Internet Explorer. I tried to follow your suggestion and trashed com.apple.safari.plist but it still does not work. I need expert help.

If you are unable to help me, I would appreciate it if you would forward my request for help to someone else.

Naomi

Carolyn,

I forgot to tell you that I downloaded the upgrade to Safari from apple after I was notified of the update. As you know Apple provides periodic update.
