Hi,
i just wanted to know, whether it is possible to override
the default download destination ("desktop") for safari or other
mac browsers? is it possible for example to choose and specify a
folder every time i click on a download-link. thanks.

Open Safari preferences, select the General icon in the toolbar, look for the drop down menu where it says "Save Downloaded Files To" and set your preference.

If you wish to specify a location each time you donwload a file, the select the file to download using CTRL-click (or right-click for two-button mouse), then press the OPTION key. Note the contextual menu item will change to "Download Linked File As", select that option and you will be offered a Save dialog.

All of this is in Safari Help as well as in the Help of other browsers. You should try using Help more often.

Thanks a lot for your response. That answers part of my question. i also wanted to know.... is it possible to make "Download linked file as" the default option. i.e can i just <"click"> instead of <"(ctrl) right click+ option">.
Also there a some download buttons/links on the web, which run scripts and start automatic download to desktop( for example if i try to download adobe reader form this link ). This does not happen in windows. Is there any way to prevent this and get a prompt to select folder? thanks.

There is no way to change the default action. If you don't want an automatic download then use the CTRL-OPTION-click or OPTION-rightclick to select the Download Linked File As option. I'm afraid you will have to get used to the idea that OS X and Windows are not the same.

If it would be helpful you might check out this site: http://www.apple.com/support/switch101/ for suggestions on how to get used to the differences between OS X and Windows.
