When i go on myspace.com then some pictures i get are just blue "?" marks and it doesn't display pictures. and it does it randomly, one time it won't show one set of pics and other time a different set. I have DSL. my Mac is a MacBook. Leopard 10.5.1
peter_ob - Dec 21, 2007 - 3:25 am
Hi, have you tried emptying Safari's cache? While you are at it try a reset too. If these steps don't work let me know so I can get back to you.
bests,
peter
I tried to clear cache and cookies, I don't know what you mean by "try a reset". And it's still not showing all pictures. And recently myspace has been messing up even worse. like it wouldn't load all the layout of the site and all the fonts and just line up all the info on the site in to a list for some reason. is there a way i can send you a picture, if you need to see it.
I forgot to mention, I went to the Mac Store and i tried going on myspace there and it looked fine. So maybe it's the internet connection but it shouldn't. I'm using DSL and I don't hear many DSL users complain about this problem. Or maybe I haven't used myspace in the store long enough to see it mess up.

Leon,
Those blue question marks are actually caused by Quicktime. Go to System Preferences and click on Quicktime. Click on the advance tab and then at the bottom of the window click on MIME settings.
Now click on the arrow next to Images - still image files.
Put a check mark next to all the formats except PDF image.
Click on ok, then close System Preferences.
Now try Safari and see if that corrected the issue.
Cheryl
Kuzminator - Dec 30, 2007 - 2:29 pm
I tried that and checked everything but PDF image and it still not working. it's doing the same thing.
Cheryl - Dec 30, 2007 - 2:38 pm
Leon,
Quit Safari
Go to Home>Library>Preferences.
From the View menu select by list. This will put everything in alpha order.
Now scroll down and delete the following files.
com.apple.quicktime.plugin.preferences.plist
com.apple.quicktimeplayer.plist
com.apple.Safari.plist
Close the window, empty the trash. Now give Safari a try. Those preference files will regenerate, so there is no worry about trashing a file.
Keep me posted on this.
Cheryl
Kuzminator - Dec 30, 2007 - 3:36 pm
ok i did all that and still nothing changed
Kuzminator - Dec 30, 2007 - 3:46 pm
ok i did all that and still nothing changed
Cheryl - Dec 30, 2007 - 4:29 pm
Leon,
The next step is to download and install the latest Flash player. Flash is a plugin that Safari uses for images along with Quicktime.
here is the link:
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id...e-flash-player
Once you have downloaded it, quit Safari, then install it.
When done, start up Safari and see if it works. Keep me posted.
Cheryl
Kuzminator - Dec 30, 2007 - 8:38 pm
ok i did that too and it's still the same
Cheryl - Dec 30, 2007 - 8:53 pm
Leon,
There is one more trick that should do the job.
1) Open the folder Macintosh HD/Users/your_user/Library/Preferences
2) In this folder, search the file
com.apple.quicktime.plugin.preferences.plist
3) Open it with Textedit - (it is in your Applications folder - just use File Menu>Open With)
4) Search for this string (without the quotes)
"application/x-shockwave-flash"
5) On this section, change the "" string to "" (without
the quotes)
6) Save and quit Textedit
7) Relaunch Safari
Keep me posted.
Cheryl
Kuzminator - Dec 31, 2007 - 2:03 pm
I couldn't find application/x-shockwave-flash and even if i did, i don't understand what you mean by "On this section, change the "" string to "" (without
the quotes)"
it says change "" string to "" (it's the same thing and what is that "")
Cheryl - Dec 31, 2007 - 4:57 pm
Leon,
My copy and paste got screwed up - sorry.
What version of Quicktime do you have installed? You should have 7.3.1
Go to Applications and click once on Quicktime. Now go to the File Menu and select Get Info. In that window will be the version number.
Before we play with that preference file (I want to copy my preference file and send it to you), please check to see what plugins you have installed. All your plugins should be in Hard drive>Library>Internet Plugins.
Check to see if any had been installed in Home>Library>Internet Plugins. This should be empty. If it has some plugins, just move them to the Internet Plug in folder that is in Hard Drive>Library.
If you have to move any plugins, you will need to restart the computer and give Safari a try out.
You should have Flash Player.Plugin
Quicktime Plugin.Plugin
Java Plugin
There maybe a few others that got installed with Leopard.
Let me know what plugins you have and we will work from there.
Cheryl
Kuzminator - Jan 1, 2008 - 4:20 pm
I have the current version, and i have all the plugins but Java is JavaPluginCocoa.bundle is that what you're talking about?
Cheryl - Jan 1, 2008 - 4:34 pm
Leon,
That is one to keep. You should also have Java Embedding Plugin.
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/16262
And Shockwave Player (which includes a plugin)
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id...ockwave-player
The installers may need Safari to quit so allow that.
Once installed give Safari a try and let me know if this corrects the issue.
Cheryl
Kuzminator - Jan 2, 2008 - 8:19 pm
OK i got all that and still there is a that problem
Cheryl - Jan 2, 2008 - 8:40 pm
Leon,
I did a bit more researching on this. Before you installed Leopard - did you have an enhancer to Safari installed? Say Speed Download, Safari Enhancer, Safari Magic or Debugger?
Go to this Web site and follow the directions. It gives a step by step that I can't make any more simplier.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306857
Cheryl
Kuzminator - Jan 3, 2008 - 12:52 am
I never downloaded any enhancers except one that's called Inquisitor, it just enhances the search in safari. I still had question marks in blue boxes before it and after. I had no problem installing Leopard, the link you gave tells me about the blue screen that you get when installing Leopard. I never got a screen like that.
Cheryl - Jan 3, 2008 - 6:01 am
Leon,
Boy, I must have been sleeping when I selected that url. I am sorry. I can not find the web page that I found yesterday.... but I did find more ideas that I want you to try.
First - Go to Safari Menu and select Preferences.
Click on Appearance
There is a line with a box next to is saying Display images when page opens. Make sure that has a check mark.
Now click on Security
In the Web content section make sure there is check marks next to Enable Plugins, Enable Java and Enable JavaScript. Blocking Popup Windows should be checked if you don't want those getting in the way while you surf.
Now, Quit Safari and go to Hard Drive>Library>Internet Plugins
Locate the file named QuickTime Plugin.webplugin
and drag it out of the folder and on to your desktop.
Launch Safari and see how it responds. Keep me posted on how you do.
Cheryl
Cheryl - Jan 3, 2008 - 6:19 am
Leon,
One more thing. Did you download and install the updates for Leopard, in particular the Security Update?
You can do this by using System Preferences>Software Update and have it Check Now for updates or doing a manual download.
Security Update:
http://www.apple.com/support/downloa...009111051.html
10.5.1
http://www.apple.com/support/downloa...051update.html
Quicktime Update:
http://www.apple.com/support/downloa...orleopard.html
Cheryl
Kuzminator - Jan 3, 2008 - 1:28 pm
That didn't do anything, and my computer is up to date. Should i put the file back? I had a really cool idea, if you are using leopard then we should schedule a time for you to access my computer and see the problem for yourself. I don't know but it might help. what do you say?
Cheryl - Jan 3, 2008 - 3:31 pm
Leon,
Sorry, but I can not install Leopard on my machine. It is too 'old'.
When you installed leopard, what method did you select to install? Archive, update or clean install?
Cheryl
Kuzminator - Jan 3, 2008 - 3:50 pm
first time i got it, i did update, but later i did archive. And the problem was in tiger and in leopard first and second time.
Cheryl - Jan 3, 2008 - 4:46 pm
Leon,
Then this problem is a carry over. Do this and see if it corrects things:
Quit Safari
Open the folder Home/Library/Preferences
2) In this folder, search the file com.apple.quicktime.plugin.preferences.plist
3) Open it with Textedit
4) Search for this string application/x-quicktimeplayer
On this section, change the "" string to "" (without the quotes)
6) Save and quit Textedit
7) Relaunch Safari and ENJOY!!!!!
Cheryl
Kuzminator - Jan 4, 2008 - 8:35 pm
ok i don't know what you mean change the "" string to "" (change nothing to nothing?)
and i can't even find that file, and you already told me to do this before
Cheryl - Jan 5, 2008 - 8:12 am
Leon,
I am not sure what happened to my paste. I am sorry for all the confusion.
Search for this string key - application/x-quicktimeplayer (it is the 5th one down from the top)
On this section, change the string true to false. (it is the last line under quicktime player). Keep all the other characters in there just change the word.
Previously, I asked you to look for shockwave - flash. This time look for Quicktimeplayer.
Cheryl
Kuzminator - Jan 6, 2008 - 2:15 am
it's already false. and when you told my to change shockwave, i haven't done that. Oh and i did a little research myself, and found out that people on forums say that this has nothing to do with flash because Safari doesn't display pictures, it's displays flash just fine. But please continue to help me with what you can
Cheryl - Jan 6, 2008 - 7:06 am
Leon,
I have been doing some research and since your plugins are correct, it could very well be Launch Services.
Let's try this first before going deeper.
Go to Home>Library>Preferences
Trash the file named: com.apple.LaunchServices.plist
Log out (go to the blue Apple at the far left of the menu at the very top of your screen, select Log out - the very last option), then log back in.
Empty the trash and give Safari a try.
Cheryl
Kuzminator - Jan 7, 2008 - 4:59 am
I did that and the problem is still there
Cheryl - Jan 7, 2008 - 6:00 am
Leon,
Create a new user from System Preferences>Accounts. Make sure the new user can Administer the computer. Now log into that user and give Safari a try.
This will determine if this problem is just the user account or system wide.
Cheryl
Kuzminator - Jan 10, 2008 - 3:21 am
the new user still had the same problem
Cheryl - Jan 10, 2008 - 5:53 am
Leon,
It is time for an archive and preserve install.
Doing an Archive install will correct the problem. It will not touch the applications you have installed (just replace the Apple Apps), nor will it touch your Home folder.
Start up from your Mac OS X Install DVD.
That is, insert the Leopard install disk, restart the computer and immediately hold down the C key. This may take a while so be patient.
Select your language. The Welcome to the Mac OS X Installer window appears.
Before clicking on the installer screen, go to the Installer menu and select Disk Utility.
Click on the second hard drive icon in the side bar, then click on Repair Disk.
Watch the activity screen. If it does any repairs - you will need to click on the Repair Disk button a second time after the first pass is done. The object is to make sure it finds all the problems and repairs them. You may need to hit that button a third or fourth time to get no references to repairs made.
Now click on Repair Permissions. When done, quit Disk Utility.
The Welcome to the Mac OS X Installer window appears.
Click Continue. The Important Information window appears.
After reading or printing the information, click Continue. The Software License Agreement window appears.
After reading or printing the information, click Continue.
An agreement sheet appears. If you agree with the license agreement, click Agree. The Select a Destination window appears.
Click the volume that you wish to install to.
Click Options. The installation options sheet appears.
Select Archive and Install.
Select the volume which already has Mac OS X installed.
You should also select Preserve Users and Network Settings, to preserve network and Home directory settings.
Click OK.
Click Continue to begin the installation.
After restart, go to the Utilities folder and start up Disk Utility to repair permissions.
Now use Software Update from in System Preferences to get the updates.
You will need to restart the computer. Once that is done, go to the Utilities folder and start up Disk Utility to repair permissions.
Now give Safari a try out, as well as your other programs you use. You then can trash the folder on your hard drive named previous system, and empty the trash.
Keep me posted on how you do.
Cheryl
Cheryl - Jan 14, 2008 - 5:20 pm
Leon,
When a ticket closes, you can reopen it. Just scroll down to the bottom and click on the words Reopen Ticket for this Tech to Assist.
Have you done the archive install?
Cheryl
Kuzminator - Jan 15, 2008 - 9:06 pm
The archive install was with no problems. but the problem wasn't fixed and i've noticed that there are even more blue question marks.
Cheryl - Jan 15, 2008 - 9:44 pm
Leon,
Now that is really strange. Did you use Software Update to get the 10.5.1 update as well as the Quicktime update?
Cheryl
Kuzminator - Jan 16, 2008 - 1:28 am
yes, my software is up to date and right now for some reason ALL the pictures on apple.com are blue question marks
Cheryl - Jan 16, 2008 - 6:13 am
Leon,
It could be that the internet plugins are not working or not installed.
Go to hard drive>Library>Internet Plugins.
Do you have quicktime, java, shockwave and flash installed?
Cheryl
Kuzminator - Jan 16, 2008 - 7:12 pm
ok, after restart the apple.com site worked fine, all the pictures are showing. myspace.com is the one i'm still having trouble with. and you already asked me about plugins and they all work fine
Cheryl - Jan 16, 2008 - 10:27 pm
Leon,
I asked about the plug ins after your archive. During an archive install, the internet plug ins you installed, may not be there.
I doubled checked myspace.com and they use Java, which you do need to update. There are many components of Java and you are probably missing one.
Download this and install it.
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id...pple-java-2-se
Then give myspace.com a try. Let me know how you do.
Cheryl
Kuzminator - Jan 18, 2008 - 5:34 pm
i have Leopard and when i tried installing java then it told me that i have to have tiger to do that.
Cheryl - Jan 19, 2008 - 11:06 am
Cheryl - Jan 21, 2008 - 6:51 pm
Leon,
Did that last Java install? Is Safari working?
Cheryl
Kuzminator - Jan 23, 2008 - 2:52 am
Java installed but those random blue question marks are still there
Cheryl - Jan 23, 2008 - 6:25 am
Leon,
Now that we have all those plug ins, Safari should behave. Try this:
Go to Home>Library>Preferences.
Trash com.apple.safari.plist and com.apple.quicktime.plugin.preferences.plist
Now go to Home>Library>Caches>Safari
Trash all the folders in there. Empty the trash.
Now give Safari a try.
Keep me posted.
Cheryl
Kuzminator - Jan 23, 2008 - 12:45 pm
tried all that, still there
Cheryl - Jan 23, 2008 - 6:21 pm
Leon,
Can you give me the url of one of the web sites that you are having trouble with?
Cheryl
