Hello
I have a B&W G4 500 with a 1gig of ram and its running OS X 10.2.8
I had some software installs crash my system. I used the software updater and it hung! anyways I had to perform a re-install of my sytem folder from my OS 10.2.0 disks
I keep my own dmg files of OS 10.2.6 update and 10.2.8 combo update on my desktop. SInce this has happened to me before...
anyways, I re-installed OS 10.2 and went threw my regular updates to get to 10.2.8---Along the way I believe I forgot to update my Safari (I would usually do this threw the software updater, which caused my system to crash in the first place) I believe there is an update at 10.2.6 which I did not install.
Now when I launch Safari a window pops up and says; this application cannot be launched because this system is incompatible.
I tried running my software updater and it dosn't seem to notice any problem with safari???
I used my disk utility to repair all permissions on my main hard drive; nothing.
I reinstalled my 10.2.8 combo updater...Nothing
What do I do now?
Thanks for your time!
AG

You are definitely on the right track, you are trying to run a version f Safari that is incompatible with the OS you are running. The problem is that you may have some how installed a version of Safari that is not recognized as obsolete to your update combo and has not replaced Safari, or any of its supporting files.
Do you have the capability of erasing the drive you have and reisntalling the OS that came with your computer, and all the software that you need to have installed for whatever you do on your Mac.?
If you can reinstall all the other software you may have besides the Apple stuff that came with your system, this might be the way to go, because you will be building the system up from scratch.
Then once you have it up an running try out the Safari that came with your install disks and see if that works OK.
If it does, instead of using the software update feature, download the 10.2.8 combo updater. THe Combo updaters have everything that is needed to update anyversion of 10.2, to 10.2.8. I cannot recall there being any single update for Safari but there may well have been one
Do not go through the individual updates using software updater, just use the Downloaded Combo Update for 10.2.8. IF everything goes well that should cure your problem.
IF you cannot do that because you have too many files that you may lose of rebuilding your software is a lot of work, let me know and we will have to take it from there

I tried installing 10.2.8 combo; it didn't fix the problem.
I can't start from scratch, to much stuff, 12gigs of itunes, iphoto, etc.... plus my Adobe cs2....list is too long.
I tried searching through apple's support files and couldn't find a safari update... is there a safari install?
Thanks

OK, I get the picture, you and me both, I have way too much stuff t ogo about reinstalling anything except new stuff of course. That's the trouble with al the music stuff there is way too much stiff t oeven risk updating the system at all.
To the best of my knowledge there is no Safari Install it came as part of the OS.
However there are different ways to skin a cat so to speak.
I'll have to take a look around some of my friends here and see if they know if it is possible to drag install a Safari. IF it is, then you need to let me know exactl which OS you are using. 10.2.0 10.2.8 whichever and I will take a look around to see if I can locate an appropriate Safari for your particular OS.
It might take me a while but in the Meantime, you should check out Firefox or Opera, both are as good as Safari and in some ways better, but I know how it is, like me you want that Safari.
So give me some time and let me see what i can find OK.
Also a good idea would be for y ou to send me a screenshot from your system profiler or run the system profiler and save the output file as a text file. I can't read Profile from OSes earlier than 10.3.0 so if you are running 10.2, you will need to run the system profiler so I can see what your exact OS is and what else is installed as there may be another problem wit hyour System.
Send the output of your system profiler to me at
stuartpa@mac.com OK.

OK, I have 2 different Safari Installers, one is version 1 and is supposed to be OK all through 10.2.8, the other claims to have originated with 10.2 + is from apple but it does say it is for OS 10.3. Either one is probably worth trying. Thre are literally tons of Safari Installers out here, just a bit difficult to locate in some cases.
Apple did a few things like rename the Version numbers so it would be compatible with OS X server and so on, so the Safari thing is a little on the messy side.
Drop me your Email address or a .mac address so I can send you these files OK

I e-mailed you from my yahoo account. If the files are available on the web, please post the url's here... Thanks

I can either send you the URl's or the .dmg files, the only thing I cannot guarantee is that either of these apps will be OK in your system.
I was going ot check a bit deeper this weekend and if it looks like they are OK then I will either send you the URl's at least that way you will be able to read the facts on these files.
I wish i could guarantee absolute safety , but the application itself may crash but it should not take your system down with it.
IF you can though it would bea good idea to back everything up.
SO far for me the best way to do this is to use a program like retrospect or Retr express and do a full duplication of the drive, so if anything does go wrong then I am able to go right back to whre I started. I still have a couple of drives with Duped systems on them that still work well even as separate strt up drives if I need them, unfortunately I don't have an OS 10.2.8 or any 10.2's for that matter.
Actually I have emailed the files to you, as I got them from places where you have to pay for membership to get them and in some cases with them being .edu sites you need a password to download them.
If you can't get all of them, what I can do is put them in the Public folder of my .mac account and let you get them by accessing that folder.
Let me know how the download works, I mayy have to send them one at a time via email, there are 3 of them one for earlier 10.2 and a couple for 10.2.8. The 10.2.8 ones are alos supposed to run in 10.3.
Let me know how it goes OK

Hi Tony, the files got bounced back to me as according to your ISP , they are too large. I could try splitting them up into smaller files. They are around 7Mb each file.
I tried again today and got them pronounced as undeliverable. I used the Email address you sent your System profiler file from. So if you do have another Email address that can accept a larger file let me know would you. Also it would be a good idea if you could find out from yor ISP what is the Max file size that can be sent to you OK

My limit is 3MBs anything bigger will bounce....
try
antoniog@gkc.ca that's my PC at work.
How do I un-split them up?
I think I will just surf with something else...... :-)
Thanks for your help

OK, it looks like I will have to put them on the Net at my .Mac account.
What you have to do there, is figure out in OS 10.2.8, how t oconect to my site.
I will give you the address and if i have a password for it that as well.
Then what you do is go to the online folder and mount it on your Mac then download the files to your desktop directly. Ths is a Mac only deal unless you have the special software needed for a PC to do it.
It will take me a day or so to get around to uploading them, and once they are there, I will send you the address and the Password OK.

OK TOny there should be 3 files for installing Safari. from Version 1, t oversion 1.2.
My folder is at the .mac location stuartpa. I can't recall how you login to someones Folder from 10.2.8 but it is a system level function and there should be a way in the menu bar under to Go menu item.
No password should be needed and all you should need to do is to drage the files to your drive and mount them. I think it is the 1.2 version you need but I really cannot guarantee it. IF yo uwant I can place this message back on the question boards to see if someone else knows how to go from here. There is probably someone using 10.2.8 somewhere around here, but it is a couple of years old and panther might be as old as some folks go. I have Panther and Tiger, but after using Tiger for a while, I see it is OK for folks who like little toys but as far as serious applications go, it does not offer very much yet as most programmers are probably waiting to see if the Intel think pans out and they are sure not going ot waste bundles of money developing for TIger by itself, they will already be planning on the Intel Stuff.
Let me know how it goes and if you want to go back to the message boards to see if anyone can confirm the Safari instalation.

SOrryr about that mate, try getme31, that will be good for about 24 hours OK. It is now 10:42 EST I have no idea at all how long it takes to have Apple set this password.
Remember you are not tryinng to access my Idisk, just the public folder. IF i give you the IDisk access you get all the Idisk stuff I have.
So you are looking for either the Idisk utility or under the GO menu item the public folder for
Stuartpa@mac.com. or stuartpa. OK

You might have t odownload the idisk utility for this to work as i am not too sure if they issued that with 10.2.8.
Like I said there is a way to get to the fo9lder from the finder, either that or download the Idisik utility. One of those 2 will get you there.
Once you open it you need to enter my user name and the password i gave you. If that passowrd does not work it is because you area trying to get to my full IDisk and for that you need my main password, OK.
