EVERYTIME A QUICKTIME VIDEO COMES ON OUR SAFARI APPLICATION QUITS - CAN ANYONE HELP WITH THIS.
IS IT POSSIBLE THAT WE HAVE SPYWARE ON OUR MAC AS ALL APPLICATIONS ARE RUNNING SO SLOWLY AND JUST QUIT ALL THE TIME, IF IT IS SPYWARE THAT IS RESPONSIBLE HOW DO I GET RID OF IT??

Katy,
You have a bigger problem than just Safari quitting if all your programs quit on you.
How much memory is installed on your computer? How much free space is on your hard drive?
To find the memory - go to the blue Apple at the far left and select About this Mac. The window that opens will show you your processor speed as well as how much memory (RAM) is installed. This is important.
As for free space, your hard drive needs 10 - 15 % free space for virtual memory to work. Just open a window and look at the bottom of the window. It will show how many items in the window you have open and how much free space is on the drive. Knowing how large your hard drive is and how much space is available will help to determine the next step.

HI CHERYL
I HAVE HAD A LOOK AND WE HAVE 1.25GHZ
256MB DDR SD RAM
WHEN WE OPEN A WINDOW IT SAYS 50.03GB AVAILABLE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE WINDOW.
I CAN ALSO TELL YOU THAT MY KIDS PLAY ONLINE GAMING A LOT ON THIS COMPUTER - COULD THIS HAVE CAUSED SOME OF THESE PROBLEMS??

Katy,
While you it seems that you have enough free space on the hard drive, you are running with the minimum amount of memory/Ram. You need to invest in more memory for your machine - especially if you are running games.
You need at least another 512 MB of RAM. The place to get the best prices is here:
http://www.crucial.com/mac/index.aspx
You need to know the exact model of your Mac as they have a web tool at the top of the page to help you get the correct memory stick for your machine.

P.S. you have your Cap Lock on. Please remember to hit cap lock key before posting on any site. It means you are yelling - and you don't want to do that.

Cheryl
thank you for all your help and so sorry about the "yelling" we had no idea!
is there something we can run to get rid of any spyware on this mac??
Cheryl - Dec 31, 2007 - 3:22 pm
Katy,
What makes you think that you have spyware? There are no known spyware for the Mac like there is for Windows. There are a couple of things you can do to help keep the computer running smoothly.
First - Do you shut down your Mac every day? If so, the nightly jobs that the os does is not being done. To correct that you can download a handy program called Macaroni
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/9633/macaroni
Once you have downloaded it and installed it, run it for the first time. Now every time you start up the computer, those jobs will be done.
Now when you use Safari, make sure you quit all your kid's games. This will help in preventing it from quitting unexpectedly.
With Safari open, go to the Safari menu and select Preferences. When that opens select Security.
Make sure Accept Cookies only from the sites you navigate to is selected.
Now click on Show cookies.
You will see a list of all the sites you have visited. If any of those sites have password log in, you want to keep those cookies. You can remove the others. Just click on one, then click on remove. You can alternatively to remove all of them.
Now close that window.
In Safari>History menu select Clear History. This helps Safari run a bit smoother since it does not have to remember all the sites you have visited.
In Safari Menu select Empty Cache. This will empty out all the files of web sites that Safari remembers so that that site loads quicker the next time you visit it.
Now you can do this regularly and Safari will be clear of any files from web sites. These files just record what kind of computer you have and what browser you use. Each time you visit a web site, a file will be placed on your computer. You can clear out these files periodically with no harm to your computer.
I hope this helps you. Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Katy,
Yes there is a version for your OS.
Go to:
http://www.atomicbird.com/macaroni
At the far right you want to click on the Download Macaroni 2.0.8 (988kB) for Mac OS X 10.2 or 10.3 link.
Make sure you delete the first version you downloaded.
