I updated tiger to 10.4.11 and now safari is not opening.
I reinstalled the update and still not opening.
I send report to apple, no answer.
i searched for a link to download safari only, but that option does not exist with apple. Anybody who offers such a link will then come up with a cannot open page message.
can anybody help me to make safari work again?
I need to open many safari files for my work.
Thanx tarika

Tarika,

First, try this.
Go to Home>Library>Preferences.
Go to the View menu and select by list. This will put everything in alpha order.
Now scroll down and locate com.apple.safari.plist
drag it to the trash and empty the trash.

Now go to Home>Library>Caches>Safari
Delete all the folders in Safari folder.
Empty the trash.

Now go to Utilities and open Disk Utility.
When that opens, click on the second hard drive icon in the side bar at the left. The one named MacHD if you did not rename it.

Now click on Repair Permissions. Do not worry about what is happening in the activity screen. When done, quit Disk Utility and give Safari a try.

hi there and thanx Cheryl
I did all this and still it does not work.
It still opens only for a second and then says the application quit unexpectedly.
In the meantime there is mails going around warning people to use the 10.4.11 system update, it seemed to have created many problems. There is no possibility this time to download safari 3 separately from the system update.
Here is the crash report i get on trying to open Safari.
Tarika

Tarika,

The problem is caused by SpeedDownload. You have to uninstall Speed Download. Then give Safari a try.

Do you have any other Safari add ons installed like Debugger? All add ons or enhancers have to be turned off or uninstalled. Then Safari should work.

Let me know how you do. If it still does not work, I do have another idea.

Tarika,

Let's try the update again.
First, go to Hard Drive>Library>Receipts.
Locate and trash the MacOSXUpd10.4.11PPC.pkg

Empty the trash

Now go here to download the update:

http://www.apple.com/support/downloa...updateppc.html

After download quit all the programs you have running, then install it. While it is installing, do not use your computer. This is especially important when it is optimizing the system.

Now follow the prompts to restart the computer. When it has restarted, go to Utilities>Disk Utility and have it repair permissions.

Now give it a try.

Hmmmm I am a bit reluctant to redownload that update, since people all over the world are warning from it. Many had worse problems then me. Also it will take a lot of time on my slow internet and i need speed download for that.
Do you really think that is a good idea?

Tarika,

I have not had problems with the update. The update does address some security issues. If Safari did not update correctly, then I wonder what else did not update correctly. Is Safari the only program that is giving you trouble? What browser are you using now?

Have you downloaded the combo update previously? If so, then in your download folder is the package. Use that.

You do have some choices. You can run the update again. You can leave things as is and not use Safari. You can use the 10.4 disk and do an archive and preserve install then do the update to 10.4.10 combo (which is a download from Apple's site).

Let me know what you are willing to do and I will help you.

Yes i did download the combo update previously and i was running it so far 4 times always with the same result. In the moment i run firefox, but a lot of my files are safari, so it is a nuisance. I am also downloading the combo again at present to see if can get it going via a new download version.
I also do have the 10.4 disk. How would i install that on top of the 4.11?
thanx for all your help
tarika
PS if you check the net, you find many people having trouble with 10.4.11

Tarika,

You should delete the previously downloaded update package. It could be a corrupt download.

All the problems with the 10.4.11 update that I have seen (thanks for the tip) have been caused by third party add ons to Safari.

Before you install the latest update download do this:
Double check for any SpeedDownload files in HardDrive>Library just as you did in your home folder library.
Now log out of the computer (you don't have to restart).
Now log back in and give Safari a try.

If it still gives grief, install the combo update and see if that works.

Tarika,

It could be a number of reasons why this fix won't work. In any case we need to get you back to a working machine with Safari behaving.

You may want to print these instructions so you have it handy.

Doing an Archive install will correct the problem. It will not touch the applications you have installed (just replace the Apple Apps), nor will it touch your Home folder.

Start up from your Mac OS X Install DVD. Select your language.
Before clicking on the installer screen, go to the Installer menu and select Disk Utility.
Click on the second hard drive icon in the side bar, then click on Repair Disk.
Watch the activity screen. If it does any repairs - you will need to click on the Repair Disk button a second time after the first pass is done. The object is to make sure it finds all the problems and repairs them. You may need to hit that button a third or fourth time to get no references to repairs made.

Now click on Repair Permissions. When done, quit Disk Utility.

The Welcome to the Mac OS X Installer window appears.
Click Continue. The Important Information window appears.
After reading or printing the information, click Continue. The Software License Agreement window appears.
After reading or printing the information, click Continue.
An agreement sheet appears. If you agree with the license agreement, click Agree. The Select a Destination window appears.
Click the volume that you wish to install to.
Click Options. The installation options sheet appears.
Select Archive and Install.
Select the volume which already has Mac OS X installed.
You should also select Preserve Users and Network Settings, to preserve network and Home directory settings.
Click OK.
Click Continue to begin the installation.

After restart, go to the Utilities folder and start up Disk Utility to repair permissions. Do not open any other programs just yet.

You will have a new System folder and a Previous system folder. In the Previous system folder>Library (not Library in System folder - the one sitting by itself) is a folder named Receipts. You need to compare that folder with the new Hard Drive>Library>Receipts folder. Just drag and drop The packages that are not in the newer folder. Do not drag over any of the Mac OS X update receipts or security update receipts.

Also in that Library folder check the Application Support folder and compare that with your newer folder as well as Contextual Menu Items, Fonts, Internet Plugins, Mail, and Mozilla (if you have it).
Once compared, you can trash the entire Previous System folder.

Note - Your home folder and the Library folder in the Home folder will not be touched.

Now go to System Preferences (light switch in the dock) and select Software Update. Click on the Check Now button.

It will come up with a list of Updates. One will be the 10.4.11 Combo Update.
Allow all the updates to download and install.
Do not use the computer at this point. It is important that no program is running when the installer does the optimization.

Once done, go to the Utilities folder and start up Disk Utility to repair permissions.

Now you are set. If you still need Speed Download, you need to use the updated version from here:
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id...speed-download

Let me know how you do.

hi cheryl
thanx for the suggestion. It has one catch, i cannot download with software update. Any download with software update which gets interrupted by a slow internet connection where there is no signal coming at times, is being stopped automatically without being saved by software update. This is one of the huge nuisances of mac, and therefor one needs speed download,I am running the updated version. To find all the updates will take another many days. Is there not another chance?
I can give it a try, but the amount of time i am spending on this is becoming ridicolous, (not that I am not grateful for your help!)
Tarika?

Tarika,

Because you have a partial install of the update, the only way to correct it without problems is to do the archive install, then the combo update. You can try this:

You already have the combo update downloaded, correct? Then make sure you You have that latest download in your download folder and trash all the other downloads you have done. You can check which one to keep by the date modified in your download folder. - I am assuming that your download folder is sitting in your home folder. This folder will not be touched when you do the archive install.

Now make sure you have the installer/download of Speed Download as well.

Next is to do the archive and preserve install and when that is done (and you restarted), make sure you use Disk Utility to repair permissions.

Now go to the download folder and install the combo update. When that is done (you will need to restart the computer) run Disk Utility to repair permissions.

Before you install Speed Download, test out Safari. Does it start up correctly?
If so, you now can quit Safari and install Speed Download.

Let me know how you do. I can then give you instructions on how to get those security updates as well.

I do not know how to externally start up from the tiger install disk. It does not say on the disk which buttons to push for external start up, neiter in the book nor in the mac help. I do not have the original software before tiger with me, it is in germany, I am in India.
i want to throw my computer at the wall by now and become a human being again and have a life.

okay, i found it, on has to press c, there were no repairs necessary via disk utility, but i could not install because it needs more than 6geg space which i do not have. So i give up now, since i think it will anyway not work. I probably have something on my computer, maybe an add on, which i cannot find. Meanwhile I will keep using fire fox, maybe at some point apple will come with a better upgrade, or i will change to leopard when i get access to buy the software, which you certainly cannot get in the himalayas. At this point i think mac sucks. One spends 40% more money in germany to buy apple computers and runs into so many problems, it sucks. I cannot even use my new 500$ motorola phone as a modem because nobody cares to write a modem script for it and there is no support whatsoever either from apple nor from motorola. The answer is probably windows.
Thank you Cheryl for all your support I appreciate it

Tarika,

In reality, the Motorola phone does not work because Motorola and your ISP are not allowing work on a script for it. They have a lock on it. Many companies do that so they can sell you an additional piece of equipment.

The Mac is better by far in comparison to a Windows machine. I know as I work on both.

You probably can do some house cleaning on your hard drive and delete those files that you no longer use or never used. Even I am guilty of downloading something, and never using it. Once you have deleted and emptied the trash, you will see that you will have room to do an install. You could back up your important files and photos to a CD or external drive.

There will always be trouble if you do not uninstall your add ons or enhancers. Apple has a warning to uninstall those before doing any kind of update.

hi Cheryl
yeah i will try again but i need a break. The hours i spent on this start to become insane.
By the way my old motorola does work fine as a modem, it is just for the new model nobody cares to write a script for mac for some reason. The new phone would work as a modem with windows, at least so they advertise.
Thanx again

okay cheryl,
you are the hero of the day!!!!!
I did everything as u instructed, and Safari is working again. I am writing this from Safari. It did take another three hours, but i am happy and I love my mac again.
I did use the combo update, which I had saved before, and i did not put the security update receits in my new system folder as instructed. Software update does not show any update suggestion now, so i suppose i am good. I did put all the extra fonts in the font folder in System/Library instead of in the seperate library folder, will that be okay?
Your patience has been incredible and I really want to thank you for that.
It was a bit scary for me to do it all, because if anything goes wrong here, i am f....d , I am in the indian himalayas a loooong way from a civilized country.
Cheers

Tarika,

I am so glad everything is now working smoothly.

The extra fonts should go in Hard Drive>Library>Fonts... not the System folder>Library>Fonts.

Just so you know, here is the list of the fonts that should stay in the System>Library>font folder and never moved out.

These fonts are needed for the system. Don't worry if you do not have all of these. This list is from my machine.

Once you change the location of those fonts, restart the machine.
You should not have any problems now.
