When I try to open any webpage in Safari it comes up with this-- POSIX error: Cannot allocate memory” (NSPOSIXErrorDomain:12.

I believe I have Mac OS 10.4.7 what do I do to solve this problem ASAP, all other internet browsers work like FireFox and Internet Explorer but Safari opens up with the same problem I have already restarted the computer.

Taylor,

First, if you have only 256 MB of memory on your iBook, you are running at the minimum required for OS X. I highly recommend that you add 512 MB more to the iBook to get better speed and performance.

From that error message, Safari needs more memory to run. First, quit the programs that you have running on the iBook. Now start up Safari and see if you still get that error.

If you do try this:

go to Home (your user folder)>Library>Preferences.
In Preferences go to the View menu and select by list. This will put all the files in alpha order making it easier to find things.
Locate and trash the com.apple.safari.plist file.
Empty the trash.
The file will regenerate a new copy so do not worry.
Open Safari.
Do you still get the error?

I still am getting the error, also now since my safari has been not working Itunes is no longer opening and firefox quits unexpectedly. Are all of these problems related?

Taylor,

First, I need to know exactly what OS X version you are running. To find this out, go to the Apple menu and select About This Mac. A new window will open. The OS version will show along with the processor speed and memory installed.
Give me those numbers.

Also, do you have the install disk of the OS version you are running? If you have 10.3.9 on the machine, you need the 10.3 Panther install disk. If you have 10.4.7, you need the 10.4 tiger install disk.

Version 10.4.7
Processor: 1.33 GHz PowerPC G4

Startup Disk Macintosh HD

I don't have the install disk with me, I am at college but I can have it sent up to me asap

Taylor,

You need the 10.4 install disk for the next step.

First plug in the power adaptor to the iBook and a good power source.
Start up from your Mac OS X Install DVD. (insert the disk, restart the computer, then immediately hold down the C key)
You will be asked to select your language.

The next screen is the installer screen. Do not click on the screen. Instead go to the Utility menu and select Disk Utility.
When that opens it may take a few moments for it to gather the information.
Click on the second hard drive icon in the side bar, then click on Repair Disk.
Watch the activity screen. If it does any repairs - you will need to click on the Repair Disk button a second time after the first pass is done. The object is to make sure it finds all the problems and repairs them. You may need to hit that button a third or fourth time to get no references to repairs made.

Now click on Repair Permissions. When done, quit Disk Utility.

Restart the computer and give it a test run.

Let me know how you do.

You need the 10.4 install disk. (disk 1 if you have CDs)

I did everything you said and safari is still giving me the same error message. What can I do now, also my Itunes is still unable to stay open, I open it and it opens for a few seconds then quits. Is this related? Should I use my apple care protection plan?

Taylor,

Before you call Apple let's try a few more things.

go to Home (your user folder)>Library>Preferences.
In Preferences go to the View menu and select by list.
Locate and trash the com.apple.finder.plist

Restart the computer, empty the trash. Now give it a try.

What size is the hard drive? It could be that you do not have enough room for programs to save their cache files. Open a window (it does not matter if it is your home folder or applications). At the bottom of the window it will tell you how many items in that folder and how much free space is on the drive. I need to know the free space - as well as how large that drive is (60 GB?)

It didn't work. I have a 60 GB hard drive and there are 8.95 GB still available.
Cheryl - Oct 2, 2006 - 3:29 pm

Taylor,

The problem is your hard drive space. You need to go through your home folder (i.e. documents, pictures, music) and trash any file that is old, unused, or already on a backup disk. This includes any papers you typed for last semester and beyond. I assume you have passed those courses, so you do not need those papers anymore.

Once you have trashed those old and not needed files, empty the trash.
You want to get to a goal of at least 12 GB of free space.

Once you have that, restart the computer and you will notice a big difference in how it works.

I got it up to 10.31 GB, do I really need to have it up to 12? If I purchase a external hardrive will this solve the problem? I might buy one next weekend if you think it might help.
Cheryl - Oct 3, 2006 - 12:59 am

image
Taylor,

Yes, an external drive or a zip drive will work. I saved all my college papers on a zip disk. It kept my hard drive clean and I still could access the documents for editing.

You should also check your Application folder. Delete those games that you no longer play. Check your downloads folder as well. We are all guilty of downloading files and then forgetting that we have them. If you have not installed it, trash it. You may have some files that you downloaded that are old versions. Trash those too.

Have you tried opening that game since you cleaned your drive?

Most of my hard drive is taken up in music. Is there anyway if I get a external hardrive that I can transfer this over to clear my hardrive up? Also what kind do of external hardrive do you reccommend? I have money left over from scholarships so I think I might just by the hardrive.

Taylor,

A Firewire Western Digital is what I use with no problems.

Once you get it, just use Disk Utility to format the drive using the Erase button.

To move your music files, go to Home>Music. From there just move the individual files to your new drive.

So if I get the external Harddrive it should solve my problem then?

Taylor,

Yes, it should. I also would suggest getting more memory for your machine. Jumping to 512MB would also make the machine run smoother and quicker.

I found a web site that gives you step by step instructions for the 14" iBook.
