Hello,
I bought some months ago a black MacBook (2GHz 2GB RAM Mac OS X (10.4.8)) and I could use parental control in Safari without problems.
This week, I had to reinstall MacOS X and since then I can't activate parental control anymore. I erased the disk with 0 writing, installed MacOS X 10.4.6 in English and installed all updates so that at the end I was running MacOS X 10.4.8. I created an account and activated parental control for Safari, Mail, Finder and iChat (not dictionary). When I check parental control check mark in Safari, it is not activated and when I try to activate it, it doesn't work. I tried with user accounts with and without password, with and without limited finder. In each cases, it didn't work. Every help will be greatly appreciated because without parental control on, I can't let my boy surf on the internet.

Hi Marc

You have to be logged in on an Administrator account to activate this.

Hello,

Sorry, I forgot to precise that I did use an Administrator account. I checked also the permissions of the files on the disk by running twice DiskUtil.

Try moving this file - com.apple.preferences.accounts.plist - to the Desktop then restart.

Files is located here;

Sorry, but there is no such file, neither in the admin account nor in the account under parental control. I looked for the file using spotlight.

Hello,

Sorry to be late but I was on a plane yesterday night. I tried what you proposed but it doesn't work.

I created the same account on another Mac (PowerBook G4, MacOSX 10.4.8) with Parental Control for Safari activated and it worked from the beginning. One important difference between the MacBook and the PowerBook is that I reinstalled MacOS X on the MacBook using the DVD provided by Apple while on the PowerBook G4, I am running the operating system initially installed on this PowerBook. On the MacBook too, parental control for Safari worked nicely as long as I was using the MacOS X that was initially installed on the MacBook.
Hopes, that this will help. Quite frustrating, I must say.

Download and run the 10.4.8 Combo Update and see if that corrects the problem;

http://www.apple.com/support/downloa...dateintel.html

This won't affect your applications or files.

I already installed 10.4.8. Doesn't change anything. I think that I know the root cause of the problem: when you get a Mac, the disk is partitioned with "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)". With that, everything runs fine. When I reinstall MacOS X, I partition the disk with "Mac OS Extended case sensitive (Journaled)". I tested on 3 Macs, 2 where I reinstalled MacOS X and one with the original installation. On the 2 first, parental control for Safari and Norton AntiVirus 10 don't work. On the last one, where I use the original settings, parental control for Safari and Norton AntiVirus 10 work fine. And I found in the Readme file from Norton, that the AntiVirus doesn't work on a partition with "Mac OS Extended case sensitive (Journaled)". I will reinstall in a couple of days the Macbook again, formatting the disk with "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)".

Norton products are known to cause a lot of damage to an OS X system. I wouldn't use any Norton products myself.

If you think you need a virus program, get

CamXav

I's the only viruses program that I've seen that doesn't cause problems.

Also, there are No viruses that can affect an OS X system.

Hello,

I solved the issue. Parental control could be activated.

The solution was to reformat the disk using "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" instead of "Mac OS Extended case sensitive (Journaled)".

Thanks for your help.

Best regards
