Whether I print from "print largest frame" or "print", the first Safari page starts to print and then freezes and stops about 1/5 of the way down the page. The page is frozen in the printer, and any subsequent printing from Safari is impossible. If I instead try to print from Word or elsewhere, I will be asked if I want to add it to the queue or continue? If I continue, the printer will spit out the unfinished page and print the Word document just fine. If I add it to the queue nothing happens forever, even if I delete the offending Safari file from the list to be printed. I have to re-cue and click on the new file to print.
I have given up on trying to print from Safari, and now only print from (god help me) Microsoft Explorer on my PC.
I constantly am updating my OS-X as updates are sent to me, so why hasn't this problem been fixed? Is there a patch I can obtain? The printer I am using is a very common one - an HP officejet 4110 all-in-one.

Toast,
My name is Cheryl and I will be assisting you.
What OS version are you running?
Have you gone to the File Menu>Page Setup in Safari to make sure you have the correct options set?
Do you recall when this started, or was printing always a problem?

10.3.9 currently
Have set the correct printer options under page setup (selected the Office Jet 4100 (Printer) choice)
It has been happening forever with Panther
It is still happening. Rebooting occasionally allows the first page requested to print out, and then all subsequent attempts freeze from Safari and never get printed successfully.

Toast,
I think the problem is with the printer, not Safari.
Go to Home>Library>Preferences.
Trash all the com.apple.print files and
Trash the hp printer selector file
Next, go to Hard Drive>Library>Preferences>Hewlett-Packard Preferences.
Trash the HP pref files
Empty the trash.
Now give a try with a print job.
Did you install the driver from the CD that came with the printer or from HP's web site?

Toast,
If that does not correct the problem, the next step is to uninstall the printer drivers and then do a fresh install.
Here is a link for the instructions to uninstall, then install with the download link to the driver you should be using.

Do not install the printer driver update. Test this out first.

Although I couldn't find your "Home>Library>Preferences" (where the hell is "Home"?), I managed to find the com.apple.print files and the hp printer selector file in HD Preferences, and removed them, and then had better luck printing from Safari (after 3 pages printed, there was an unexplained freeze, but I was able to restart the printer from the Printer pop-up. I think I'll just stick with this solution for now. Thanks for the help.

Toast,
Home is your User folder.
Click on the desktop
Using the Go menu at the top of your screen you will see several options.
Home is one of them.
Home is where your document folder, music folder, picture folder is at.
There is a utility that can help you trash all the preference files.
Printer Setup Repair 4.2.1
http://www.fixamacsoftware.com/software/psr/
You need to use the Temp and Preference File Management to trash all the preference files.
